Ok guys dont laugh im still really confused with this.
Whats the difference between a limited slip differential and a posi differential?
My Super Duty has a limited slip differential how does it work? The traction on snow and ice really sucks unless im in 4x4. Should I get a aftermarket differential?
Thanks ~Gage~
Limited slip and posi are the same thing. I think "posi" comes from posi-track which is just what GM called their limited slips back in the day, same as Ford called them Trak-lok or whatever.
Anyway, limited slip diffs do just what their name says, they limit the amount of slip in the rear tires. They'll basically transfer power to the wheel with the most traction, as opposed to an open diff which transfers power to the wheel with the least traction.
If you want both wheels to get traction all the time then you need to be looking into "lockers" like a detroit locker, ARB, or some other sort of locking diff.
Most accurately posi is short for positive traction differential. GM did use positraction as their trade name for the device, and I think this is where the term "posi" really became common realm.

on my 2004 superduty i do not have limited slip, just wasn't built with it. if you do have limited slip rear-end and both tires aren't spinning at least most of the time or you are noticing a vibration around corners and such you need to have the rear-end checked out. my brothers 2004 f150 has a LS diff and it started doing the things above. took it to the dealer and the clutches in the diff were junk so they fixed it and now it's as good as new.
