Hi ,
I called Mid Fiftys to order the bolts that hold the bed to the crossmembers and the young lady that I spoke with says that they are riveted ? I may not have explained myself very well . So I wanted to wing it by you guys on here . What I am looking for is what size bolts to use for the front , center and rear crossmembers . Do they require a special bolt or will a hex head bolt work to bolt them to the frame itself ? My concern is will the hex head bolt interfere with the wood when I go to install the oak boards ? Thanks
I got the complete SS kit from MAR-K but you can buy the hold-down bolts separately. The originals used Allen head but the replacement are Phillips. The bolts are tapered and you must countersink the bed wood to install. They are not riveted but are threaded for nuts.
MAR-K also sells the complete bed assembly instructions or they are free if you buy certain bed parts. Check out their web site for details.
Thanks for the info . I don't think she understood what I was asking . I have ordered most of my parts that I needed from mid fiftys and have had excellent results . I will have to check this company out that you suggest and see what they have to offer .
If you haven't drilled the holes in the bed wood yet, it is much cleaner to weld bolts to the crossmember under the wood rather than having them pass through the wood.
I took what was left of my bed apart about two years ago. From what I remember the bed skid strips had 5/16x18x1.5 carraige bolts. My crossmembers were bolted tru the bed wood with big counter sunk washers with 5/16x18x? flat heads. I believe there were two lengths with the center crossmembers being longer because of the support blocks under them.Sorry I don,t remember the lengths of the crossmember bolts. You could add the thickness of the wood, crossmember, chassis thickness plus a 1/2 to 3/4 for the nut, flat washer and lock washer and you should be close. For the center two crossmembers add the thickness of the support blocks also.

Normally the bolt that holds the mid cross members also goes THRU the wood.
In my case I bolted the cross bar to the chassis using standard hex bolts, and then routed out a small hole in the back of the 2 boards to fit around the bolt head.. so I don't have any bolts showing. (I am using the no bolt strips too)..
