Head Bolt Question

I am replacing the head bolts on my 226 flat six. I broke three off in the block( that is another story) The original bolts appear to have both a thicker and larger head than a standard hex head bolt. The originals are 7/16 -14 tpi and are 2 5/8" long. I can use a standard 2 1/2 inch 7/16 bolt but the head wont look like the original. I"m also trying to decide between grade 5 and grade 8. Any idea where I might find something that looks more original?? I looked at Mcmaster but couldn't find a heavy hex or a flanged hex that would work. What are your thoughts on plating vs. black bolts. Any info would be appreciated.

The 48-52 Truck Chassis Parts Catalog lists the 226 head bolt with the same part number as that of the 48-52 flathead V-8, so it should be readily available in the aftermarket.

I'd like to pull my heads on my 255 flattie, but the bolts look like they've in a long time. What's the best protocol for getting those out safely? They are kind of hard to get to to put any kind of rust breaker in. I've got an impact wrendh. Dennis Carpenter also wants $3.50 per bolt which sounds very high. What's a reasonable price for a quality replacement?

Impact wrench is the only way to go - even torque around the bolt. I bought my last set thru Hot Rods and Custom Supply - cost about $50 per 48 - 5 years ago - if I remember right.

Contact Red Hamilton at Red's Headers. He'll treat you fair.
