I have an 8" lift on truck. Looking at a Rapid hitch for towing. On there website it says if the measurement from ground to upper inside of towing receiver is 24" or greater I need the 10" drop hitch. Anyone have experience, do i really need that much. I dont want to have to much drop.
i've only got a 4in lift on my truck and run a 6 in drop hitch and works just right for me, but my cousin brad has an 8'' and 37'' on his Powerstroke. He also has a 10" drop hitch. The amount of drop you need depends on the trailer you plan on towing. Brad has a car hauler that he tows his rock crawler around on, it has a 2ft dovetail if I remember right. And he is having alot of problems out of it b/c it drags sometimes and is tearing the back of the trailer up.
My suggestion is if you have a trailer already or have one close, just back up to it as if you were about to hook up, lower or raise the trailer with the trailer jack until it looks like it sits where it should, then take your measurements for the hitch.
Yea ill have to do that. It would be nice to get a universal size since I always seem to be towing different trailers friends, families, etc.. Sounds like 10" might be about right.
You want the 10". I have sold and used them both. With any lift at all, the regular one is a little too short. The 5.75" needs to be about an inch lower with my 4" lift to hold most of the trailers I've used level.
8" is a lot of lift, but ultimately it will depend on your trailer. I once read a method, I think in putnam's app guide, where you measure from the ground to bottom of the trailer coupler. Then from the bottom of the truck's receiver, subtract the two and this is the drop you need.
Get an adjustable one so you can change it depending of which trailer you pull.
The Rapid Hitch is adjustable. The OP is asking which Rapid Hitch he should use with his truck, the "standard" 6" lift/drop Rapid Hitch or the 10" lift/drop Rapid Hitch.
DB, I agree with ReAX, back your trailer up and drop it down uintil it's in the position/angle where you normally tow it, then measure.
I have the "standard" 6" version on my wife's Excursion. When they first came out a few years back (when I first bought it) I almost went with the 10" version because my original plans were to put a 4" lift on the Excursion. I've since decided not to, and have done the V code, B code spring swap (Putting OEM F250 4x4 springs on the Excursion) which lifted the Excursion right around 1.75 inches. Even with that slight lift, I only have two more positions I can use that lower the hitch, when I use it to pull my 4-horse bumper pull.
I also have a Rapid Hitch on my F250, but since it's a 2-wheel drive, and I have no intentions of lifting it much, I knew I could get away with the 6" Rapid Hitch.
Without even measuring, I'd feel very safe in sayng you'll need the 10" Rapid Hitch. But measure, just to make sure, because Like ReAX stated, it all depends on your trailer.
Here is a picture of my 10" drop. You can see the measurements. It is on the lowest setting in the picture w/the 2 5/16" ball. I like it alot, but as mentioned above, it really depends on the trailer you're towing.
