In 1997 Exploror with a 4.0 SOHC while the engine is idleing and the compressor is on the engine rpm's will drop so low that the engine shuts off. The ac works fine and the engine runs OK above idel speed. This only occurs at idle and only as the compressor cycles on. What is causing this?
Sounds like it could be a bad idle speed control valve. When the compressor engages the idle speed control should open to increase the air to the engine to deal with the increased load put on the engine. I'm sure others will jump in with their thoughts.

Here's my thoughts..........I think you nailed the problem.
Oriley's had to order that part.
In the interium I took the valve off to look at it, I cleaned it (electrical parts cleaner) and dried it with an air compressor. The motor still does the same thing, the ac compressor will cycle on, the rpm's drop to almost shutting off, the compressor clutch disengages and the rmp's go back up to normal idle, then repeat. The up and down cycles are a few seconds long.
Does the problem still sound like the idle air control valve? That valve is $102.00 at Orileys, wow.
