Question Expedition or Exploror

-------------------------------- --------------------------------------

OK guys, I need some help. After a little bit of saving up, I'm ready to upgrade my truck. I was getting too big for the otherwise outstanding ranger, and am forced to sell to get something larger. (by the way, it is in the classifieds if you are interested). Anyway, I'm looking to either got a used Expedition, or Explorer Sport. Besides the fact of general transportation, I WILL be outfitting the truck for some 4x4 fun. Lift, Wheels/Tires, the obvious engine improvements Ect. So which is it? The economic and peppy Explorer sport? or the xxl behemoth Expo. Thanks for your help!!

Expedition or Exploror

I'm pretty sure this is the last or soon to be the last year for the Explorer Sport, also I dont think the body was up graded with the rest of the Explorer models (still on the 93 chassie) If that doesnt bother you, its a great truck

I beg to differ, the Sport and the Sport Trac have the same front suspension design - torsion bar. Ford hasn't built a frame with twin-i under it in a while. So the Sport is sitting on a modern chassis just like the explorer and the sport trac.

I test drove the Sport when I was looking for my Sport Trac and aside from it being a little short (bouncy) it was a nice 2 door SUV. I ended up buying a 2002 Sport Trac with a 5 speed and I love it.

I kinda think the expedition would be a little heavy and long for 4x4 but people use 4-door f350 diesels, so I imagine it wouldn't be too bad.

Go drive a Sport Trac 4x4, thats a fun offroad toy. And they look cool jacked with all the offroad goodies. (IMHO)

You can't go wrong with either, but my choice would be the Explorer Sport. It does everything well. Roomy, fuel efficient, adequate power, good ride, etc.

Expedition or Exploror

For rock climbing I would definitely go with an Explorer over an Expedition. Reason being is that the wheelbase on the Expy is too long, and it would be very easy to get high-centered. That's the last thing you want trust me

As for the new sports...they are NOT IRS like the 4-door Explorers. They still have the leaf spring and IFS setup like the older Explorers. I for one would probably stay away from a sport unless you upgrade the leaf springs by doing a thing called add-a-leaf, because every single Sport if you notice sags in the rear because of in-adequate leaf spring strength (It's a carry over from the Ranger)

The SOHC V-6 is a very nice motor for speed, but won't be the best rock climber. Peak torque isn't made until 3,400 RPMs and it doesn't make a lot of low-end, but put some 4.10s and you will make up for that. It has a very nice top end performance

Merge the two and go get a 1996 Bronco with a 5.8L ...

Thumbs up Expedition or Exploror

I'd vote for the Explorer. I have a 4 door one with some grippy tires and it always pulls thru. The 4.0 is a good motor and because of the Explorer's small size, you can easily fit where the big expedition won't.

Definatly go for the Explorer... WAY cheaper to lift for one thing and alot better for trails and climbing.
