I wouldn't mess around with this recall-GO DO IT! If the CPS goes out while your driving the truck will shut down, and you will lose power to everything! That means no power brakes, or power steering. I can speak from experience, at 75 mph on the highway this is something you do not want to happen, I was lucky. The other thing CPS failure will leave you on the side of the road so you make the call recall today, or tow truck tomorrow.

A new angle....FEAR. Sounds like stealership rhetoric. Baseless and untrue. Only a very low percentage of CPS failure result in complete side-of-the-road breakdown verses the large percentage of people who have completed the CPS recall only to incur additional costs and vehicle problems. The numbers "seem" to indicate that the CPS recall is more a stealthy revenue stream, than a safety issue.
I can assure you that I am in no way associated with Ford or any dealership. If the recall costs you money go to different dealership. I am in no way trying to scare anyone I am only stating that the recall is important, and if you don't trust the service department at the dealership, buy the CPS and install it yourself, it only takes about 15 min. to complete, and Whitey Ford thanks for saying that my post was baseless and untrue, I only stated my personal experience with this issue.
Thanks, Ryno
My post, if read carefully, reflects the statistical data from this forum, for which I am a supporter. That data clearly indicates members have experienced additional costs and vehicle problems when exercising their CPS recall. Though I am extremely happy your experience with the CPS recall was positive, it must be highlighted that is NOT the norm here. This forum allows users to make educated and cost effective decisions concerning their 7.3 PowerStroke vehicles. Decisions based on fear have historically been shown to be costly, and contributed to longer vehicle down times. That money could be better spent supporting this family-style website.
By all means do the recall if it gives you piece of mind. Ford isn't gonna see my truck for that OTOH, mine shut down on a large 6% downhill off ramp towing 10K lbs trailer. BECAUSE I have a 6 speed, I still had engine rpm and therefore brakes and steering. (imagine downshifting a dead truck....) BTW brakes and steering do work with the engine dead, it just takes monster huge muscle power.
many of the recall issues deal with #8 and I believe p1308 DTCs, some result in engine self-destruction to the tune of 5 to 15 K dollars expense. Ask 4inchlift about his experiences then decide for yourself.
I myself drive 50 miles one way to avoid the local ford dealer that is a couple of blocks from my house.
I agree, and yes what I have read in this post many people have experienced a negative outcome from dealing with this recall. I also think that more than likely the individual dealership service departments are to blame. When I went in to have this recall done the service rep tried to tell me that my transmission was in need of service, but when I told them that the trany was brand new and still under warranty his attitude changed and told me the tech must have made a mistake...yeah right. I also asked why would they be performing unrelated vehicle checks, his response "standard procedure", my response "so you can take advantage of the uninformed?" Amazingly the projected 90 minute service only took 20 minutes. Imagine that!

Ryno, for 30.00 you can put one in your glove box, with a wrench, and if this problem occurs, you are covered. I appreciate your feelings on this. But the there are several horror stories of recalls gone wrong. It seems not uncommon for the dealer to put in a bad CPS and then start chasing the injectors from there. What ever your choice, no one here trys to judge, we do what we can to help.

Sorry if I have given the wrong impression, I think that FTE is the most informative and helpful resource that I have come across. I am going to subscribe so that I can contribute to the maintenance and development of FTE.
Sorry again for giving the wrong impression,
Thanks, Ryno
I took my letter to dealer last week and talked them into just giving me the sensor. I traded an old broken CPS for the new grey one and put it in the toolbox for a spare. I've had the CPS go out while driving, you can control the truck but it takes some effort to safetly get it off the road.
I've had my truck quit while driving, sitting in the driveway warming up. I just bought the truck in October so didn't know what coulb be causing it. Thought maybe the remote start. But reading on here I realized it was not. You can still control it while going down the road. I didn't even stop, just put it in neutral and it would start right back up. It did it on my gf one day when she had it. It again started right back up. I get the notice in the mail the other day and had it changed yesterday. Not sure if it was the black or gray, but obviously it had a problem. I'll grab a spare and keep in the truck.

I was doing right around 75, in the rain, on a three lane freeway when mine shut down. It's no big deal bro. You still have ample and easy, functioning steering and brakes. Just because the power function of the steering and brakes are no longer working doesn't mean you suddenly don't have the ability to steer or brake any more. It just takes a bit more effort.

Agreed. That's why most of us will carry a spare CPS with us.

Why change a CPS that is functioning properly, to a gray one that has been shown to cause problems?
I can see carrying a gray one as an emergency spare, but I wouldn't change out a perfectly functioning black CPS for a gray one.
Let me elaborate, I am aware that you can still steer and brake when the truck losses power (it just takes strong arming the wheel), when it happened to me I was in heavy traffic and carrying a 1500lbs load in the bed I did not have much room to react, it just makes for a unsafe situation, can we all agree on that? I am not trying to promote anyone fixing something if they do not believe a repair or replacement is necessary. I was only sharing my experience with this issue.
Thanks, Ryno
Just got my recall letter yesterday. Been reading about this for years (my 2nd letter) . I'll try to find a dealer who will hand it to me for a spare. If it ain't broke...
Is this a second recall or is it thaqt the West coast is ahead of the game.? I got a letter about 9 months ago and had it changed last November. SWhould I be looking for another recall letter? Someone please enlighten me.
