Eddie Bauer difference?

Hi i just bought a 1996 Eddie Bauer bronco 5.8L E40D, what id like to know is what the difference is between an eddie bauer bronco and all the others besides all the bells and whistles inside, is there any mechanical differences? Also it has 179k miles on it, looks like its been for the most part taken care of and ill take very good care of it, how many miles do you think i can squeeze out of it? Also i would like to remove the cat because there is no emissions requirements were i live, what is the easiest way to cut that out of the exhaust, and does it sound alright all stock but without the cat?

There are no mechanical differences. It's a trim level designation only. If the air filter box and breather filter aren't soaked in motor oil below the air filter, the engine should be fine for some time yet.

Exactly what do you hope to accomplish by removing the cat? Unless its clogged it is a completely passive device. And if you destroy the substrate and leave the hollowed out shell you create exhaust turbulence in the system which only serves to slow the exhaust gasses down as they head for the tailpipe. If you plan on completely removing it and replacing that stretch of pipe I suppose you would end up with a small amount of noise increase as the internal substrate would not be directing the flow of gasses through and aligning the flow straight into the rest of the system... again turbulence but not as much as leaving the hollowed out shell. Otherwise it seems like a lot of trouble to gain nothing but some noise.

well i want to remove the cat because i saw on another thread that you might get some power and mileage increase by opening the exhaust up and 1 of the posts said you could remove the cat to get some of those effects, and the air filter and air box looks fine so thats good, also there is a small sticker under the hood in the latch area that says air lift air springs installed on this vehicle, then it says the proper psi's for the springs, are those stock?

A couple of personal experiences proved my problems started with the nut holding the wheel. Years ago I had a '86 van with a 5.0. I gutted out the catalytic converter and it lost some power. My observation on this forum is the 5.8 owners don't look for more power very often here. Like you, when I got my 5.8 a few years ago and messed with the air flow. I replaced the air inlet tube and have chased problems for two years until finally returning to stock. I finally learned the engineers know more than I do.

If the oxygen sensor(s) has more than 90K miles consider replacement. Of course a good tuneup, copper plugs and pulling the codes are suggested. My Bronco has 185K and I hope for 300-400K. Be sure to replace E40D filter, fluid and drain torque converter too.

In an answer to the question about the air ride bags, I am not aware that this was ever a factory option on the Bronco. Sounds like someone added them possibly for towing stability.

I have a '96 Bronco EB with the same engine-trans combination. The only difference I can tell apart from leather seats and power accessories is that it has quad front shocks (2 per wheel), and the rear springs seem to be a thicker than I've seen on other Bronc's. But, this might be an option that could be ordered for a non-Eddie Bauer packaged Bronco. I've seen quad shocks on F150 4x4's of the same era, and they were'nt EB's.

Mine does not even have the brackets for quad shocks. It does have the towing package and the rear stabilizer bar.

Good luck with your 1996 EB. I have a 96 EB and realy like it. I have 48,000 on mine it has tow pac with quad shocks in front. My selanoid pac in tranny is leaking into the wire harness . I need to replace that but it`s the only repair I`ve had to do in 10 years I`ve own it.

FYI - Not all Eddie Bauer's have leather interior. Some were ordered without.

Front quads were an option on all the big broncos especially if it was snow plow prepped. The discussion of the EB differences has been carried on before and really it is an interior upgrade from the xlt. So not alot of differences between an EB big bronco and just an XLT.

Thanks for the clarifications, guys.

I've seen EB F150's and a few Bronco's that had cloth seats with the Eddie Bauer logo, and XLT versions that had leather seats, so I figured that might be a separate option. My seats (front captain's chairs and rear fold-down seat) are both leather and have the "Eddie Bauer" script on them. The driver's seat also has the lumbar support option, which I think probably came along with the captain's chair. I've never ran across another Bronco with captain's chairs that did'nt have lumbar support, anyway.

Same for the quad shocks... seen XLT's that had them, and EB's that did not. I've been told that this was an option on "snow plow-prepped" and trucks with the "off-road" package. The off-road package also included things like skidplates, etc.

When I was shopping the Bronco I have now, I talked to a fellow who had a 1995 EB Bronco for sale. He had bought it brand new, and said that when he got it there was some stuff from the Eddie Bauer catalogue included with it. Of course, ten years later it was either worn out or long gone, so the truck was for sale without it (and I did'nt end up buying that Bronco anyway). Has anyone else heard about anything like this?

Yeah, Ford had some deal with Eddie Bauer retail that put some silly accessories in the truck when you bought it. Emergency kit maybe, driving gloves...ya know the kind of thing Eddie Bauer stores would sell for what they call a "driving enthusiast". It was rumored at one time that the famed and much sought after rear cargo roll shade was available through Eddie Bauer but they had a Ford part number so it wasn't an EB exclusive item even if you could get a replacement through Eddie Bauer. This is yet another of those options that was not necessarily exclusive to the EB edition Bronco.
