Hey there, I know this is an old post, but if ur still interested in knowing, I got a 76 f250 with the 460, its not stock now, but orginally it is an 8.0:1 compression motor, with about 239 ish horsepower and 300 something torque. It is not considered a High compression motor, for example a 302 has 9.0:1 compression and its not a high compression motor etheir. As far as Interceptor heads, if you can find a set of 429 interceptor heads yes, they should work just fine as the 429 and 460 are of the same family. I hope this helps, BTW, get these two books(I have them both myself)
"FORD PERFORMANCE" by Pat Ganahl
and
"HIGH PERFORMACE FORD engine parts interchange" by George Reid
they are published by Car-Tech, these will tell you everything you need.
Serving suggestions for the 460. Searching out old heads that probably need a rebuild on top of their high "these are classic" price probably isn't the most cost effective way to do it....
yes old heads are expensive to rebuild and hard to find. The Edelbrock preformers flow nice can be improved on and are only a few hundred more than buying and rebuilding old heads. the Cobra jet and SCJ heads are also available.
Yeah, I was going to mention that too, about rebuilding old heads, new ones are the way to go, but if your really wanting those interceptor heads and you by chance got them laying around, go for it. I should have gotten new heads on my truck, but, I had a budget and I got my 460 rebuilt at a motor shop for about 1500, thats 500 bucks more than a stock rebuilt 460, and they did my engine, not somebody elses, and for that 500 extra, I got 9.7:1 pistons, RV cam, they had to bore it .040 over regardless, plus they did a little milling on the heads, to true them up, nothing fancy though. I then added all the rest of my go fast goodies myself. Yeah, I may pay the price later for not taking it to a more Pro shop, but thats what fit my wallet, another place wanted 3500, and that didn't include labor, sorry can't afford that. But, it comes down to the old saying " How fast you wanna go, its all what you want to spend".
