I'm in the process of dropping a 460 into my 76 f250 and am wondering if the 460 is internally balanced or externally balanced. I need this information before i go and buy a flywheel.
Could i take a flywheel off a early 70's 460 from a car, or do i need one specifially from another 79 460. Will i need to pop the oil pan to see which crank spacer it is?
the crank spacer is right behind the harmonic damper, if it's external it will have a hatchet weight behind the damper that you should be able to at least feel. Also you can look at the block right above the starter, if it has D9TE it's a 79 or later model and should be external balanced.
As to the flywheel/flex plate question, no you can't use one from an early 70s model, it has to be for a 79 or later model engine.
thanks for all the information. I was looking at the motor last night yea it does have a hatchet weight behind the harmonic balancer so it is externally balanced. I will look for that number marking above the starter and get back to you.
yep but youll probably need a 1/4 or 3/8" spacer plate between the bellhousing and the block because the flywheel is a little thicker and the clutch kit is a little thicker
I have done 4 swaps using the 400 bellhousing and have never used a spacer. If your buying a flywheel get one that has the bolt pattern for a diaphram style pressure plate.
If you use a spacer be carefull not to pull the pilot shaft back too far out of the pilot shaft bushing.
I've done 1 460 swap before but that was on a 78 that had a 351M before and we didn't need a spacer. does the diaphragm clutch have a different style bolt pattern then the 3 finger clutch?
