1974 reman long block with 85k died on decel. Spins over ok. Cold, it will start but will not rev up with pedal to metal. Dies at idle. Acts like severely flooding. After short time, it will not start. It may backfire when trying to rev. Replaced holley carb with known good carb but have same symptom. Plugs look black. It has been using oil(valve stem seals--I replaced them on one head so far) and coolant slowly. No oil on dip stick and coolant is very low but I think these issues are not associated with dieing. Has oil now. Any ideas??
What's the best way to check if timing has jumped?

Reason: change question
It will only run at about 1000 rpm with throttle wide open and only for a short time. I could get a helper to ck timing. I had to quit last night. I ques when #1 piston is at top of compression stroke is when dizzy should point to #1 and timing mark should point to tdc on balancer. Is this correct?
Ok, here is the latest. #1 piston at tdc but dizzy is pointing to about #4. Timing marks line up ok but chain does have a ton of slack and gears have lots of wear for only having 85k. Distributor gear and cam gear both lock ok. Compression reading is between 155 and 175 pounds. Witness marks on harmonic balancer show it has not slipped. What do I ck next and how can dizzy be off so far and the timing gears still align. HELP PLEASE!!!
Pull the distributor out and check to see if the gear on the bottom of the dizzy and the gear on the cam look alright. I've seen a couple of those dizzy gears shred after a while.
Found pin holding gear onto dist shaft had shattered and let gear rotate. Hole in shaft is wobbled out on one side indicating the gear had been walking back and forth for awhile. Now, who sells a quality reman dist. Oreilly has A1Cardone but I was hoping for something better. Napa and AutoZone don't list anything reman on line.
Lifetime warranty on the A1 Cardone Reman., if you're looking for better go for an aftermarket dizzy such as Mallory, MSD etc. Price wise I bet that Cardone dizzy is the best bang for the buck.
Most of the time you can buy just the gear. If the pin is missing you may be able to just get a replacement pin or gear, instead of buying the whole dizzy.
