i used what amsoil told me to use. they told me i did not need any additve for the rear. that may have not been the reason. that is what the mechanic told me. i did not figure i would get anything if i went after amsoil i just took my lumps. as for the trans i have 2001 not sure of the number but it is not the one you have i am on the third one in this truck . the last one i had built by a local trans shop with some heavy duty upgrade so we will see what happens this will be my second summer pulling the boat with it.
Amsoil will never cover that rear axle as they cannot prove it to be caused by the fluid on thier end. Thier argument would be that they didn't know if the axle was overloaded or not.
Probably true there! I would have at least called them to complain, but it sounds like the poster isn't really sure that was the cause of the problem.

I am not a differential expert but my understanding was that the friction modifier used in the limited slip differentials was actually there to REDUCE friction and help the limited slip disengage when motion stopped etc. I believe not using the additive (or not using enough) will shorten the life of the clutches in the rear end...It won't blow up in a week or anything but it will not last as long as with.
Feel free to correct me if I am wrong as again I am not an expert.

Yah, I was referring more towards the comment that ford transmissions suck in general.
Correct, its a common misconception, but the additive reduces friction and makes the clutches slip easier. You add it if the LS is grabbing in corners too much. If the clutches are grabbing too much it could cause a clutch disk to break, I've seen it in the TracLok differential before.
That was the problem. i had to have them replaced. it happen about six mounths after i put the amsoil in. But i am just going by what the shop told me. Iam a plumber not a wrench turner.
