I have a 1981 F100 with a 300 six and a C4. When the weather is cold it won't shift into gear until the truck has been running for about 10 minutes. After it finally goes into gear, it stays in first for 3 to 4 miles before it will hit second. After that, it shifts and runs fine until the next day after sitting in the cold all night. Then it starts all over again....Is the tranmisson shot or can it be fixed?
Fluid level and condition. Dark, smells burnt, maybe you can get away with a fluid and filter change. Might as well adjust the bands while you're at it. If you change the fluid and notice a lot of metal in the pan..a rebuild might be in order.
Thanks, but I checked the fluid already. The level is right on and no dark color or burnt smell. I picked up a good used C4 today. After a new filter, pan gasket, front and rear seals( I hate leaks) I'm going to take an afternoon and throw it in.
I appreciate the responses, on here you don't know someone's experience level so you have to start with the basics. I have a 302 out of a 1973 Mustang I have rebuilt to go in the truck. And I mean I rebuilt, the only thing hired done was the machine work. Bored .040 over, deck shaved, line bored, balanced. I did all the rest, assembly, rebuilding the carb, the works. I rebuilt a 9 inch rearend for the truck, new shocks, new kingpins in the front, all new bushings, swaybars. The only thing I'm not really good at is transmissions, so guess what goes out...lol. I was just trying to get a few more miles out of it until I'm finished getting all the new parts for the rebuild. Then it gets an old Nash 5 speed manual shift I got with the Mustang 302 and had rebuilt. It's a good old truck, but very soon, it's going to be a GOOD old truck!!
