Is there any difference in the rear end on a SRW verses DRW? I was talking to a guy (at a campground) he was telling me that I have an accident waiting to happen pulling my 15K 5er with a SRW. He said bearing failure or tire failure will possibility happen. Isn't it the same axles, same size bearings as the DRW? The ends of the axles are different of course but the basic axle is the same, isn't it? Also, any opinions out there about me using a SRW? I've got those firestone air bags and it sits up there real good (I realize that doesn't make a difference with bearing size, etc) and I don't have any troubles at all with sway or anything (long wheel base, towing package and heavy duty tires). Opinions please, I don't want to end in a ditch with a 5th wheel on top of us.
I tow my 36' 5er around 15,000 lbs. all the time. I took it all over the north with their bad roads and all. No problems noticed. I don't have air bags (wish I did) either, it does sag a little but not enough to send the heaqdlights up in the air.
That guy was just blowing smoke and pumping his rig up. Just be sure you have good quality "E" rated tires with good tread and you will be fine.

Neal, I wasn't going to argue with this guy because, to be honest, I didn't know if there was a difference on axles. He drives a dodge so I didn't know if 'they' have a difference in axles. I also have pulled mine over over the US and Canada with no problems. Is there a difference between the F250's axle and the F350?

im not sure on the 96's, but on the 97's theres a ton of differences in available rear end/axles on the 97 just for the 250 alone. you had the option of fully floating, semi floating, sterling, dana, ford, etc. so yeah, theres a lot of differences in the axles lol.
just in case you dont know, on a semi floating axle the axle supports the weight of the vehicle as well as transmits power to the wheels. on a fully floating axle, the axle doesnt support the weight of the vehicle. so you can heap the weight on it without having to worry about breaking an axle. so a 250 with a fully floating axle will actually be more capable of handling the weight than a 350 with a semi floating.

A 94-97 F250 or F350 with a PSD came with one axle only... a full floating Sterling 10.25 with either 3.55's or 4.10's
An F-SuperDuty (F450) had a Dana 80 with 4.63's or 5.13's

on the diesel thats true. but there were various different axle packages available with other engines. which is good to know when ordering parts for one.
i often pull a bumper trailer weighing well over 15k when fully loaded on SRW F250 HD with BFG MT (C range) and the only trouble i have is the Mother F-in Tranny.

No, no other rear axles offered for the F-250 and F-350. Engine doesn't matter. The only difference is the 1997 F-250 light duty which was a different body style.
the majority of the miles on my truck are with a 15k horse trailer behind it and quite often 20k worth the hay in the summer im on my second set of bearings and only changed the first set since they were getting close to spec but that was about 200k miles

im not talking about the 97 light duty truck. thats a totally different truck all together. i used to work with a guy that had an obs f250 with the 300 6 cyl. it had a gvwr of around 6500-7k lbs and had a semi floating axle. and according to my tech book, all f350's came with a 10.25 fully floating and the f-250 could come with either a 10.25 semi-floating or a 10.25 fully floating. but it looks like we may just have to agree to disagree on this one lol.
