You need to find a DRW rearend from a later model truck (likely 92-97) that has the sensor in the housing.

What he is trying to say is that the transmission needs a road speed sensor reading to determine shift points.

92 and later trucks use the same sensor for ABS and speedo signal.

And the E4OD depends on the speedo signal and tach signal for gear selection.

They make sensors that can be installed in the transfer case rear housing that can generate the speedo signal, but you will have to install a speedo gear on the output shaft and install the sensor and then reroute the wires from the rear axle to the transfer case sensor.

By the time you do all that, a 92 or later axle will probably be a better deal.

installing a speed sensor in the transfer case wont work
the pulses from it are far less than the rear axle sensor

I guess you could go to an aftermarket controller that can communicate with a transfer case VSS ($$$), but your cluster speedometer will still not work. Best to look for a DRW axle that already has the VSS/ABS sensor on the fiffy housing. Much easier and cheaper in the long run.
