[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Jan-03 AT 10:38 PM (EST)]What is the best way to combat this problem? As for large areas, welding new metal is a must as in Krosati's outstanding post. (I've printed that one and put it in the binder in my shed for future reference) But on my truck, around the back window and at the upper corners of the windshield, I have some small rust spots. On the back slider, they are about the size of a quarter. In front, they are right at the corner of the windshield and a little under the rubber in both areas. Is sanding and naval jelly the best way to get in there without pulling the rubber? What about using some putty/filler on these small areas? The corners near my windshield are a little deeper than the rest. These are kinda hard to get at, any ideas? Thanks, Blair
If your rust is just pinholes or surface rust, use a dremel tool to grind out the rust and fill with a good body filler, prime and paint.
But if the holes are large, the rust has spread, you just can't see it yet and you will need to patch. Welding right over the rust isn't a good idea as the metal is thinner due to the rust and will just burn a hole.
I'm going to assume the rust by the window openings started under the rubber seal and are spreading. The only way to really get at hese is to remove the glass and seals. Then you can effectivly treat the areas. Good luck and let us know how it turned out. (take some pics so we can see the before and after)

hope that helps you, its the way it should be done if you don`t want any more rust around that area again.
