I need to replace my dried out and leaking windshield rubber. The glass itself is ok; the milky corners just adds character! Safelite won't do it saying the windshield will most likely break in the removal and they don't carry the old glass. Years ago I had to give up trying to replace the rubber on a simple cj5 so I don't even want to think about trying it myself again. what's going the best way to go about this?
Really? On a Jeep? It's a flat piece of glass! It can't get any easier than that.
First order a windshield seal from Dennis Carpenter and then buy new glass and have their tech install it. Verify that it is OK with them to provide the seal as sometimes they will not warranty their work if the owner supplies the parts.
Me? I'd install it myself if you're keeping the original glass... it's not rocket science. It does require patience, the proper technique, and a helper that understands what to do and not to do. Here is where YouTube is your friend.
Tip: Use a nylon cord - not cotton. Fashion a garotte on both ends for leverage as you pull, roll, and tuck.
Soapy water in a spray bottle or spray some Windex on the rope/seal lip as your pulling the rope to flip up the seal over the window frame. As your buddy is pushing from the outer side.
Or better yet call your insurance co. and tell them a truck flipped up a rock passing you on the hwy.

+2 on the Dennis Carpenter gasket. There are two of them, one has trim the other not so get the correct one. Installation is pretty simple, but at my age I might pay a few extra bucks to a glass company to install new glass for me.
Replaced the gasket on mine a few weeks back. After about three days, windshield developed a crack.
There are options to safelight, surely. Even in my little town, our Thad Ziegler glass and a local (do it on-site) company was willing to replace my gasket for me (wish I had let them).
Cut away as much of the existing gasket as possible, prior to attempting removal. Allow some time to really clean-up the windshield frame. I used spray silicone to lubricate prior to placing windshield with gasket in the opening and then used more for the install.
My gasket came from steele rubber, but it was expensive. Make sure you put a nice soft cardboard base with towel cover down on any surface you lay your windshield down on. Reduces scratch chances.
