I'm seriously considering picking up a 94.5 PSD project truck- the story goes that the owner had new injectors put in and noticed a "small external coolant leak from the heads" when the injectors were put in. Going down the road and the truck quit running, motor stopped hard enough to sheer the bolts off the flywheel. Mileage unknown (the guy I'm dealing with listed the truck on CL for the owner, who is not computer savvy). The truck is located just a short distance from me and I could tow it home today if I wanted.
So my question is- how likely is it that the motor is completely TU? Even if it is... how much are the injectors worth as cores? I realize the injector from the dead hole is probably hosed if the motor hydro-locked, but what about the other 7?
Truck is a 94.5 PSD, ex cab 4x4, stick shift. Transmission and flat bed are gone, the rest of the truck is there, clean title and CHEAP! They just want it gone.
Making a runner out of it would be the better option, but that's what I was thinking initially too. Basically, I need to ensure the wife I won't lose $ on it
Chase why not drive over and give it the once over since it's fairly close? I'd think you would have a much better idea whether to part out or rebuild. Also take some pics and post!
Chase I would buy it. Even if the motor as a whole is not salvageable for $500 you can't go wrong. You could sell the injectors and turbo and make your money back.

I agree. If the block and/or heads are shot, you've got the top of the motor you could either keep for cores, or part out. Is the body in any decent shape? Interior? If it is ok, but the motor's bad just scrap the motor and you still have the rest of it for a platform buildup when you eventually get another block. My $.02
I had a 94 F450 7.3 (turbocharged IDI) that got very tired. We put a Powerstroke from a wrecked 96 in it. It was pretty simple to change over. My heavy equipment mechanics did the job, and they reported that they put many of the external parts from the old engine on the new one. They did say that by getting the complete harness and ecu out of a wrecked truck, they only had to hook up a few wires to the chassis. This was a manual transmission truck, and the donor had an automatic.
My point is that if the old engine is toast, it is practical to use a later Powerstroke.
Thanks for the input guys, but I got beat to the punch. Should have not told the wife and just bought the sunny beach... it's easier to beg forgiveness then ask permission

Ah... that just means that you'll find a better one for a project down the road!!
