Mods to Stock early 99 questions

I am in the planning stages of doing some modifacations to my stock 99 f350 4x4.

First I wanted to change to a 6637 filter, are there any other changes or parts I would need other than just take out the stock filter box out and clamp on the 6637?

Also since being on here I have read about changing my pcm to a later model pcm. Can I just find a used one on ebay or something or are there specific ones I need to look for?

Also want to get a BTS valve body or Transgo tugger kit which would ya'll recommend?

And last 4" exhaust how easy to do your self for a none mechanic?

Does this sound like a good start?
I mainly use this truck for pulling my daughters horses to barrel racing events.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like your on the right track, 6637, CCV mod, and exhaust are a great place to start. Let me know if you need any help, I also have a early 99 and all these and the PCM swap and am very happy with it.

6637 filter- if you still have the stock early 99 intake you'll need a 4" 45 degree elbow to make the filter fit. If you have the late style intake, all you need is a 4" piece of exhaust tubing or 3" ABS or PVC coupler to adapt the filter to the stock intake.
PCM- if you plan on doing the DP Tuner down the road, don't do the PCM swap. Jody can tune your PCM just fine. In fact, Jody told me last week that the PMT1 and PMT2 PCM's that everyone swaps to (me included) are really hard on the stock trans and likely the reason so many stocks trannies burn down. If you want to do the swap anyway, look on car-part.com for a 2001 ECU.
Trans valve body or Tugger kit- depends on if you want to spend more for a bolt-in kit or spend less and do some of the work yourself. Either option will accomplish basically the same thing.
4" exhaust- simple if you buy a quality kit. You will need help getting the down pipe in, but other than that it's pretty straight forward.
Other mods to consider- good gauges (trans temp, pyro, boost). Isspro and DiPricol are probably the best out there, with Autometer closely following.

Here is the info to look for if you go to car-part.com shopping for a new PCM:

PMT2
2001 F-Series 7.3L DI TC VRAA7S5 1C3F-ZC 1F719S0A10 DPC-422 216 5A07 PMT2 DIESEL 250/350 INCREASES CLUTCH PRESSURE OVER PMT1

PMT1
2001 F-Series 7.3L DI TC VRAA6S3 1C3F-ZB 1F719S0A05 DPC-422 216 219C PMT1 P131 N/A

Look for the "1C3F-ZB" or "1C3F-ZC" in the description to help narrow down your search. I bought mine on there for $80 shipped.

That's weird, I was told that the PMT1 was easier to tune and he could get more out of it. My tranny shifts way better now than it did with the Early '99 one that I had. I will need to give them a call and see what's up. Thanks Chase

I was told the same thing, and really liked how the truck ran/drove after the swap. Then I get on the horn with Jody, and he says that the PMT1 and 2 are, in his opinion, the hardest of any of the factory programming codes on the trans. Since you are tuned now it doesn't matter much, I ran for almost a year on the PMT2 PCM... hope I wasn't too hard on it!

Where a good place to get a 4" 45 degree elbow for the 6637?

Visiting with Tony W about the ECU's, he said the PMT-1 is the easiest to tune because of the available parameters that he can adjust. Maybe in stock form the PMT-1 could be harder on the trans, but when tuning it would be the best choice, then they can tune the shifts appropriately.
What is different on the early '99 transmissions that would make the PMT-1 harder on them? Being factory ECU, I wouldn't think it could be too hard that you'd end up losing the tranny.

I did the 6637 mod, today, on my 99 F-350. I was able to use the factory intake. I needed to move the drivers side battery a bit forward so the filter would fit. I will do the 4" exhaust tubing later.

Its not the trans, is the trans programming. I can't say why the PMT1 or 2 is harder on a trans than other programs, maybe Jody will tune in?
PMT1 is the base programming that Jody and TW use to build their tunes off of. In the past, Jody at least recommended early 99 guys to buy a PMT1 PCM because he could do a better job tuning that PCM than the others. Now that he's got much more live tuning under his belt and has a better understanding of what is going on, he does not recommend the PCM swap to early bird owners anymore because he can get just as much performance from the early bird PCM as a PMT1.
