Tow Package Wiring

Hello, bought another Ford and have a few questions. My truck has the tow package. I have the plug under the dash for a brake controller, but I only have a 4 wire connector at the rear bumper. Where can I find the other end of the wires from the brake controller? Is there another plug somewhere else? Thanks for your time. -Jake

The 7 pin harness is easy to install. Follow the 4 pin harness up under the bed to the closest wiring connector. The 7 pin harness will plug into these connectors by sepereating the connector and plugging a 7 pin connector harness into the two connectors. You can pick up a 7 pin harness at your local trailer supply store.

Since your truck only has a 4 pin connector, then you may want to install a transmission cooler.

On top of that, what controllers are compatible with the plugs on our trucks? Are any just a straight plug in?

Controllers in general come with no plugs on the wires at all. My truck came with a wiring harness (and relays) that plugs into the connector under the dash. That harness like the controller that I purchased had nothing on the open end and is intended to be wired as per controller instructions to the individual leads of the harness provided by Ford. I am sure that such a generic harness would be available separately when you pick up a controller if you don't currently have one. Good luck!

you can normally buy a plug adaptor for "Ford" or "GM" on each controller.

I purchased a 1994 Jayco Eagle 265 BHS travel trailer and was wondering about all the details on Brake Controllers. It is good to know that Brake Controllers do not come with the harness to plug into the connector. I noticed that on the F150Online.com Forums that on the 2001 supercrew there is a grey plug just behind the OBDII diagnostic port.

The following information comes from the following poster:

The color of the wires on the plug are blue, green, red, white and brown. The wires are as follows:
Blue....electric trailer brake feed
Green....brake pedal switch
Red...12v postitive...always hot
White....ground
Brown....interior vehicle illumination (not used)

The factory wire harness that you will need to attach your brake controller will plug right into this plug. The factory wires are colored the same as above.

After-market and brake conroller wires are colored as follows:
Blue....electric trailer brake feed
Red.....brake pedal switch
White....ground
Black....12v positive

I have confirmed the port under the dash and I still need to purchase a brake controller. As far as the harness goes does anyone have any suggestions on what I should look for in a harness and where to pick it up from?
