In the 2011 models the only difference I could find between the regular tow package vs "max tow package" was the tow mirrors, brake controller, and an "upgraded rear bumper." Could I presume that if I added the brake controller to the "regular" tow package I could tow the same amount (lbs wise) as if I have the "max tow package?"
I have the tow package (like all FX4's) with the options being the TBC, but I put the tow mirrors on myself. I looked on Fords site but couldn't determine what the difference is either. I've heard someone say on here that a 4:10 rear MAY be the part of the max tow pkg., I'm sure someone will chime in with some better info.

In Ontario Canada we have to order the towing mirrors as an extra. The Max Tow comes with upgraded rad, oil cooler, rear springs and bushing mounts, steering gear, brake controller and 3:73 rear gears. It has the upgraded bumper and 7-Pin wiring harness. You must get the Ecoboost. Crazy thing about it is the price. With discounts the "Max Tow" is cheaper than the regular tow package.
A nice feature is the telescoping mirrors, had them on my SD and a few inches further out makes a big difference in seeing farther back. I'll just look for add-ons or something for the powerfolds on the FX4, and use as required. I don't pull every day.
I didn't get max tow because I don't want the required 3.73 gearing. I will miss those pull out mirrors like I also had on the super doodie. If I find I need them later I'll add them.
The tow package enables the truck to tow up to the tow rating of the truck, and the Max Tow enables towing at the maximum tow rating. On my truck the tow rating is 9,500#, but if I had the Max Tow Pkg., it would be 11,100#. I've been RV'ing for 11 years using F150's and bought only trailers well with in the tow weights of the trucks, and have been fine with all of them.Since a Super Duty is way more truck than I need, the F150's with the tow pkg. have been working out fine, these trucks handle trailers surprisingly well.
My understanding is that if you want to tow more than a 5000 lb trailer you need the max tow package. Period.
Al
Thats not true, I got an 011 3.5l SC XLT with 535 tow package, rated for 8,600 maximum tow weight. I could NOT get Max tow/627 package on the SHORTBED. Could of if it was the Longbed.
Max tow is required on the FX4 to get the 4.10 gears, as is the Ecoboost and 20" wheels. A truck with 3.73s can still get the Max Tow package by itself.
I just got my 2011 FX4 supercab with this configuration. The 4.10s are very low. I can't wait to get my 275/65R20 Nittos on to replace the factory Pirelli's. Also very anxious to get a trailer behind it.
