Hey guys, my name is Tyler im 20, and go to Purdue University. My mom's best friend's husband is selling his V10 f-250 (not sure what year).
I've got an old '97 explorer that i've been wanting to do a SAS to for quite a while, and just found a nice D35 I would consider. Enough about that.
If I turn my current DD into an offroader, would the V10 be a good tow rig? Are there certain years I should stay away from, or seek out specifically? Maybe link me to some threads outlining the differences?
Ohh, I'm a newbie to the big truck world, but know my way around a huge variety of autos (currently own: a 1966 GTO, 1964 Galaxie 500, 2006 WR450, 1997 Explorer, and a 1976 Glastron Carlson Ski-boat). Just want some good wholesome info on the V10, thanks.
Hey welcome Tyler to the site. Yeh the V 10 is an excellent tow vehicle. I wouldnt be afraid off any years out there. Oh man you have some nice vehicles 66 GTO an a 1964 galaxy. Sweet. 97 explorer as an offroad vehicle. Sounds likea great plan. Ok is this truck a reg, super,or crew. Just curious. Good Luck keep us posted on what you decide to do.
Yah, I've seen the truck a few times, and I know it gets very regular maintenence and the guy who owns it, babys it, he just wanst a 2010. I'm thinking it is ~'01 I know it's the extended cab (not 4 full doors) and it's 4x4 a really good looking truck if you ask me. When did they go to the 3v?
Yah, I love my '66 GTO it's a numbers matching powerglide/tri-power car that is worth too much if you ask me. I got it when I was 12 and restored it with my dad. He signed the title over to me when I graduated high school. Picked up the galaxie to turn into an NMRA drag car, and really want to turn the explorer into a capable trail rig.
I want to pick up this truck, so I have a way to transport my toys and get to the grocery store all in one package. I average ~12mpg in my explorer is that about equal to a V10 F250?
Maybe he will let you try it out, sort of a towing test drive. I think you are going to love it as a tow vehicle. I only pull a 5,200 lbs. travel trailer. If I didn't have mirrors I would forget it was back there.

they 3v came in 2005 along with a better transmission
the 2v and 4r100 trans from 99-04 are great trucks, couple little quirks here and there but if the truck was properly cared for then you shouldn't have any major issues..
the V10 should get you anywhere from 10-14 in town and 11-15 highway. it all depends on how you drive the truck, if you treat it like a hot rod dont expect great mpg.
but 12mpg is a very realistic number just depends how you drive the truck.
I've got a 2001 V10 extended cab 4X4 that I bought a few years with 140,000 miles and I primarily use it for towing my 8000# travel trailer. Works great just wish I had 4.10 gears for the hills. Overall it has been OK. I think I have the common problems with this truck.(rattly doors, vacuum leak, exhaust tick, )The truck rides pretty good for being so massive.
Ok, i think the explorer and trailer would be the heaviest, and that would end up around 8k. Man my boat would probabbly feel like a jetski back there.
has anyone heard about spark plug blow out on the first v10s???? i'm looking at a ford rig for my class c motorhome, and wasn't sure if there are years to avoid !!!!!!
You should have no problem towing the explorer on a trailer. I pulled my full size 3/4 ton dodge with a plow in the back of it, on a trailer several hundred miles completely trouble free. Had to down shift to 4th a couple times for some bigger hills but thats it.
I also have a 24ft pontoon boat that I launch at a friends beach in our lake and its a very steep sandy hill down to the lake and the truck hauls that boat up out of there and down the road like nothing. I can even put my full size yamaha rhino 700 in the back (1200lbs with accessories) and the truck hardly squats and if it wasnt right in my rear view mirrior I would forget its back there.
These trucks are excellent tow rigs especially with the V10
