Diff. Question

How can I tell if my rear diff ring and pinion are set up right? My dad replaced my rear end while I was in school (purdue). He's never changed a ring and pinion before and I don't think he knows as much as he thinks he does. When I went home i noticed that there was still an unopened tube of marking compound from the rebuild kit. And When I drive it I can hear the rear end and I'm almost positive its the sound it makes when the Diff's about to give but it might be a u-join I haven't gotten to drive it much lately so I forgot which sound is which. The new centersection he put in is a posi so I was wondering if that would make the sound? Sorry that's a lot of stuff but I don't want to lose my third diff in 2 years

You could pop the cover off and use brake clean to clean it out. Then use the marking compound on the gears and see what the gear pattern comes out to look like.
