Hydro boost is a system where hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump is used to assist the brake master cylinder rather than the more conventional vacuum boosted (power) brakes.

Most recently used in ford products that have tight firewall clearances due to the wideness of modular engines.

I had considered doing the rear conversion on my 96 also. Occasionally I see mud and water with it, but mostly daily driver. I have used a set of brake pads called Edge and they stop really well. This is the third vehicle I've used them on and each time I've been impressed with how they grab.

Works great, nice firm pedal, I winter drive and there is no issue with braking, its very well balanced even on ice.
not to be a pest about this . but did you convert your truck to hydro boost? and do you have a picture of under the hood?

how did you "shorten" the cables. and do you have a picture of the set up with the wheels off? just curious is all.

That is right, about 2 years after I did the rear disc upgrade I found a new Hydro boost on eBay for an E450 and bought it for 50 bucks, figured it would make for an interesting upgrade and give some extra braking power to the 35" tires.

You can find all my build here, though there isn't much on the rear disc cause that was before I started document my builds - might be a few pics in the hydroboost section, think I added some when I upgraded my gears to 4.88s. BOSS's Builds - 4x4 Preservation

Take Care.

Thumbs up

I'm definitely putting rear discs on someday! Low buck kit from ford for truck 8.8 rears is only $380, only $290(!) through KingFords link. Should help the fronts wear a lot longer. I hadn't seen the explorer setup on broncos until now, sounds like a pretty plug-and-play change, no rear lock up even with the original proportioning valve.

Plus, I'd much rather change a set of pads than shoes... I run cross drilled up front but the truck could still use more brake with all the heavy lift parts. A new hydroboost setup from JBG is $$$, so I'll probably just opt for a bigger booster (I've heard of people using f250-f350 boosters on 80-96 broncos).
