2002 SuperDuty F-250 4 x 4
Have some gear oil leaking from dust seal on passenger side. Can I get to the inner seal (to replace) by "simply" removing the axle shaft and differential cover? Will internals of differential need to be removed? If so, can it be done without special tools/knowledge?
I've never replaced the seals but the service manual shows the seals being installed from inside the pumpkin with the differential removed. It also shows using special tools to seat the seals in the axle housing but you may be able to do this without those tools.
I did gears two months ago so I'm familiar with this. You will have to pull the entire hub/knuckle assembly to pull the axle shaft and the carrier will have to come out to get to the inner seal. Dana axles use shims inside the carrier bearing, so you won't have to worry about shims when you put it back together, but they go in tight and some recommend a case spreader. If you are very mechanical you can do it yourself, otherwise have a shop with differential experience handle it. Where are you located?
That would probably be best, but I think the fluid level is below the axle shaft so it might not leak into the tubes badly. If you've never changed your differential fluid it would be a good time to do so.
I had to replace mine a few years ago, it was the passenger side that was leaking on mine also. I did mine one saturday. They make a tool to install the seals with to make sure they go in straight. Not a real bad job just takes time.
