Mag Hytec diff cover install question

<HR style="COLOR: #ffffff; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" SIZE=1> <!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->
<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I just noticed the EVAP canister mounting bracket is very close to the top of the mag hytec cover. All though its not touching I fell if I was to load the truck down it would hit the top of the larger mag hytec diff cover.

Anyone else notice this? I dont like it.

This is on my 07 F-150 4x4 stock height in rear.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

If the Mag Hytec sticks out further than the stock cover, it looks like it will be a problem. I would think you have a good 3" of down travel before the bump stops limit downward movement. That's not to say you could trim the offending piece. It seems to only limit the forward location of the spare.

Hello!

I noticed it! Mine is a 2004 F150 4x4 stock height in the rear and it was certainly going to be a problem installing the Mag-Hytec cover with that bracket so close as you mentioned and showed in your picture above. So we lowered the spare out of the way and trimmed the bracket back as shown welding in a new connector piece to the original bolt on bracket. The next day I hauled 2200 LBS of weight 200 miles away and everything was very clear of the new diff cover.

I purchased my truck used a year ago with 114K miles on it. The owners manual says you do not need to change the diff fluid unless you are servicing the rear end or unless it has been submersed in water. Not knowing the history of my truck I didn't want to take any chances and I thought it was just good 100k mile service to change it anyway. Besides, my old cover was rusty and ugly anyway so it was time for a face lift. My gears looked to be perfect! The new cover holds twice the fluid so be certain to add Two Bottles of the Ford friction additive if you have a limited slip diff. Also, you may see that your 2004 owners manual calls for 75w-90 Synthetic Oil only in the rear end. Ford has updated this in a TSB to use 75w-140 Synthetic instead! The dealer looked it up for me and confirmed this. Plus the tag on the rear end said to use Only 75W-140 Synthetic Lube. Much hard to find than the 75w-90 but it's out there! Just keep looking and get it right!

Glad I could update this post!

For both Dan and wreedz71: do you have 9.25 differentials, or 8.8? I'm thinking about a Mag Hytek, but it's a pretty long range thought at the moment.

Also, I am assuming both of you have 18" wheels. From the pictures, it looks like a 20-inch spare might have some clearance issues too.

Thanks for posting the pictures,

Hank,

Mine is the 9.25 12-Bolt Diff. The 8.8 is a 10-Bolt. Mag-Hytec makes top of the line Differential Covers for either of these sizes. Mine cost me $247. More than I wanted to spend but I could have bought a chrome cover for about $40 but it would have gotten chipped and started rusting after a year or so. plus the Mag-Hytec covers double the Oil Capicity allowing it to run cooler and they also have a drain plug for easier changing and they have two strong magnets in them to catch and hold any metal shavings or chips. And you can't tell by my pics from under the truck but from outside of the truck looking from the rear that new Aluminum cover looks really sweet!

And I installed a set of newer take-off 20" optional wheels on my 2004 and installed new Bridgestone Duelers Tires on the wheels. That was an expensive week!

Good Luck!
