79 to 80 Bed Differences.

I want to put bed rails on to cover the dings from a 5th wheel to the top of my 77 bed. You can hardly find any accessories for a 72 to 79 bed, but a lot of catalogs show numerous items for the 80 to 96. How much different are the two beds?

The tailgates and latches are different, I'm not sure if the bed rails are different widths or not though.

I do know that you CAN put a 80-96 bed on a 73-79. I think that the inside of the bed is the same, but not sure about the rails of the bed. call the catalog company to see if they can tell you how wide the covers are. then go out to your truck and measure.

the 80 and up beds are more squared off then the 73-79 beds for what you are asking. however with a little tweaking and forming of the edges of the rails they should fit just fine. you might whant to check to see there is a difference in the rail caps for the 80-86 beds compared to the 87-96 beds. and that is because the top of bedsides of the 80-86 have a raised section, where the 87-96 beds are flat on top just like the 73-79 beds. hope that helps.

Thanks for all of the input. I just found, of all places in a NAPA catalog, a company called DeeZee that actually list 73-79. They only have one model for these years and they come without the stake holes in them. But I guess that’s better than nothing.
