I need eduumaacated. Garrett picked up one and it works with my little portable radio/DVD player I received for Christmas. I took my CD's and ripped um with Windows Media Player and spent some time cuttin' um down to three play list. Two are the main Play lists and one is 176 tracks (10.8 hours) and the second is 230 tracks (12.8 hours). The third is just 44 tracks (2.3 hours) and the same track as on the second playlist.
So the idea is that I can play music on my way to Uummtah (and back) and not have ta listen to the same song over again. But what do I need ta get? I've seen MP3 players on the net from $5 up. 4 gig?
What you need to know to figure out how big of an MP3 player you will need is to find out how much music you have right now. Do you have all the MP3's saved in one folder somewhere? If so, right-click the folder and go down to properties. It should come up with a box that will tell you how many Gig's of music that you have.
Also, are you planning on putting more music on down the road? If not, just get one big enough to hold your current song lists. If so, I would jump on something 1/5-2x the size of music that you have now (Ex. If you have 2 Gig's worth of music right now then I would personally buy a 3 or 4 Gig player)
The tracks range from 2 to 9 meg in size. Most are 3-4 meg. So If I avarage high and say 4 meg each then there are 406 tracs then thats about 1.7 gig. Don't know if the thrid playlist will use the same tracks or have ta copy them again and I don't know how much additional room other stuff ta run the MP3 Player will take. So I was thinkin' 4 GIG. Not sure what all they do or more important what I need one to do to be able to have several playlists on one. I'd like to be able to switch back and forth from one list to another and even skip tacks or repeat.
I picked up a cheap and easy to use magnavox MP3 player at wallmart for $35. Lasted a long time till I left it in the car on a cold cold nite and now no worky. Held 2 gigs of music though. I`m gonna take it back and get another one. Price is right, and easy to use. Came in handy last summer when I flew to Tucson.
Jack when I pick you up at noon we'll discuss it. But the one I bought takes a jump drive. That way I can change music at the drop of a hat...
# of songs is limited to the jump drive size but with jumpdrives getting free @ 2 gb it shouldn't be a problem. I keep 3 drives, one for loud crrazy adreniline songs, one for easy listening, and one for weird Al. Just switch a drive for my mood.
Then I play it through my FM transmitter through the stereo in the truck. You could also use your laptop, as a player, since you have it in the truck most of the time anyway. That is what Duane did all the way to Wyoming.
IPods are popular for a reason. They work well, and can take abuse. But they are kinda pricey. There are a hundred different brands and most of them do the same thing.
I have different tastes at different times also. So I figured I'd just make more playlists as time goes on. I have enough trouble keepn' Green on the road without haven' ta try ta change a thumb drive. Garrett's is a San Disk Sansa clip. I found some good info on it. I have had trouble with FM broadcasting in my truck with the big inverter running, GPS, Laptop, ect... Tried that on the Dell Duane has as I couldn't hear the DVD player. Maybe I just need to filter or shield stuff. Any way Garrett has been using my little boom box that I received for Christmas and he plugs his Mp3 into it when they go over to the garage to work on stuff. So my plan is to set the boom box in the passangers seat and plug it into the inverter and plug the MP3 player into the boom box. Garrett's has two cables. One plugs into the USB on the laptop for down loads and power to charge and another to the strereo. My car stereo does not have an auxl. jack or I would use it. I asked for the boom box which has a CD player so I could take it camping with me. And I would not have to worry about running the battery down in Green playing music. Seems like that would be a low cost way to go.
There is one I was looking to pick up, it plugged into the cig lighter socket and had a usb port on it. You put you thumb drive in and it had player controls on it and a remote and it just played it thru the radio however there are a few things to look out for.....
make sure you have some kind of controls (play, stop, skip etc)
Get an FM transmitter that plugs into the cig lighter, I had to replace batteries 4 times on the way to Wyo
If you have an Aux input on the front of your radio, use it. Driving thru a bunch of towns will cause interferance no matter what fequency the transmitter is set to, with a straight cable you don't have to worry about it.

The FM receiver I have plugs into the cig lighter. Ya want it? Shiba has trouble playn' music with other stuff running. Don't know why. Must not have a good sound card ur somethin'.
Yup the cable into my boom box is the way I think I'll go. Better sound and less cost than getn' a new radio fer Green. And if I get one like Garretts it can set in the center console and I can pick it up and skip, repeat, or change playlists without a lot of trouble.
Garrett said the ones I saw for sale on the net fer $5 were random play things. I'm not looking to buy till after the first of the month and I want to spend as little as I can. On the other hand it gets below freezin' where I go and it needs to with stand nights in the truck with temps down in the teens.
