If anyone ever asks you put an alternator in a 97 mercury mystique...Just say no.
a fifth of southern comfort and a 12 pack of brewskies didn't even make it better....you have to pull the freakin right-hand half-shaft to get the alternator out.
There should be a special place in hell for the engineer that designed that kind of stuff.
My daughter had an early Ford Probe with the 4 banger. I cussed the engineer that designed the location of the oil filter on it every time I changed oil. It was located on the firewall side of the block about halfway up on the block and could only be reached from below and you couldn't see where the darn thing went on, only feel it when putting the filter on. Man I cussed that engineer.
I had to drop the shaft on my old 88 honda accord to get the alternator out... and the "S" series saturns have a crappy location for the oil filter....behind and to the top of the block...ehh.. Now my old `86 VW golf, I could change the oil on it without even jacking it up. Oil filter was up front, and the pan bolt was easy to get to and it sat high enough the drain pan fit under just right..
Del, there isn't enough room in hell for all the stupid engineers in the automotive industry. I would really like to be the guy at end of the assembly line with the power to say NO you can't sell this kind of junk.
AMEN
daughter wanted to buy a used honda told her to go ahead but don't ask me to fix anything on it.
changed a starter and alt. on one before and that was one too many..Any motor that sits sideways is screwd up from the start..
A lot of the stuff they design is as if it will never need replaced or break. For stuff that is going to wear out or needs regular maintenance like an alternator or oil filter it is just plain stupid how they design it.
Jeez, oil filters that are hard to access when they need replacing at every oil change which can be every month or so.
Seems ta me that we need a law on oil filter location. My Sploader is in a great location. Tucked up high enough to be out of the way. And it goes in from the bottom straight up so's ya kin fill the new filter with new oil afore ya put it on. I always hated startin' a motor with an empty filter.
My favorite was replacing the heater core on a 90's lincoln. Lets just say the book time is 8.5 hrs and requires removing the entire dash and front seats!!
