I'm new to this so I thought that I would give it a try. I got a 03 6.0L Lariat and today the Transmission temp gage started to act up. While driving it goes up to normal temp and then after 15 minutes or so it will drop to cold, then back to normal, then to full hot and stays there. The check gage light comes on, and the tow/haul light flashes. I'm assuming that this is an electrical problem, but don't really know where to start. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance for all the help.
Mine's been doing the same for weeks. I brought it to my buddies Ford dealership to scan it and it's getting low input from the trans. temp. sensor. I bought a new sensor but haven't had the time to replace it.
I was driving home today and was slowing down to make a right turn when I felt and heard a clunk sound under the truck. I looked at the dash and noticed the Tow/Haul light flashing, the Check Gauge light on and the dummy trans temp gauge at zero. It drove and shifted fine afterwards. Where is the trans temp sensor located? Is there a way to disable it since I have an aftermarket gauge? Thanks in advance. All the other gauges work fine on the dash.
The transmission controller uses the trans temp to help control the shifts. You don't want to disable it, you want to fix it. It's located inside the transmission pan.

Mark... thank you for replying. Well I guess that would explain the harder than normal shifts its experiencing now. Would it be ok to still drive it this way for a few days until I can get it fixed? Again, thank you!
Replaced mine about 2 months ago (TFT sensor) If I remember right it was about $50 when you drop the pan and your feet are pointing towards the rear look up at the valve body and it will be on your left. Remove the wire clip and you will have to pull it down with a pair of needle nose pliers. There is a O ring seal on it that snaps in place. Be prepared to catch about 5-7 quarts of oil and when you pull the old TFT sensor out keep your face clear as your going to get more drainage.

How many quarts of fluid would I need? I'm almost at 90,000 miles right now so it couldn't of happened at a better time! Thanks for your help.
I would catch the oil in a clean container like I did and reinstall the fluid when the pan is bolted back up then have a hot flush done. I reinstalled mine because I only had 7,000 on the last change. I think when I drained the pan as many as 7 quarts came out. The whole job changing the sensor, motor oil/filter change, and lube fittings while taking my time was just under 1.5 hours.

I'm glad it doesn't take all day!! I am actually going to change the oil and change the brake fluid this weekend so this just adds to the list. Unfortunately I can only afford a pan drain and tranny filter change right now. Did your truck shift hard when this happened to you?

Yes it was shifting hard when it did shift. I only drove it 1 day after finding check gauge light on.
