Chipped key

Im looking at getting a remote start alarm, and the guy said I have a chipped key. Now, I dont think I do cause the key for my 99 is alot smaller than the one for my 2000 expedition. Also I dont see the "theft" light flash on the dash. Anyone know if they are chipped in 99, but just look diffeent?

The chipped key is much larger, and has a small door, rectangular in shape on the end near the slot where your key ring will go through, the easiest way to verify if you have it or not is to go to the hardware store and get a plain steel key made if it will start your vehicle, it doesnt have it!( ford uses a "theft" light on most all there vehicles.)

I have a "security package" which is bascially an alarm, kill switch, and LoJack, but I don't have a chipped key. My sis has an 03 Mustang, and her key is chipped is waaaaay bigger than mine.

I guess size really does matter when your key is small

As suggested above, go to a hardware store or wally world (walmart) and get a steel copy made of your key (it'll work - or at least mine does. I hate carrying that glob of plastic).

Take the copy to the guy and see what he says....

If he still says it's chipped, I think I'd look for my remote starter somewhere else.

I lost my second key for the 00 X and found I will need to pay Ford an hours time to reprogram the new key(s). At Ford the PATS key's cost around $45 I was told, I got two keys shipped off ebay for $25.

I took the two blanks to the hardware store to have them cut and have a steel blank made. For the heck of it I thought I'd try the two PATS cut keys in the ingnition. The keys turned the motor over but didn't start. Got a price of $70 to have the new key programed and they will find the keyless entry code at the same time.

Are you sure you need a chipped key? My original had a big plastic head - I didn't like carrying that lump of plastic so I went to Walmart and had a plain steel key cut for $1 (I figured even if it didn't work the ignition, it'd be a spare for the door that I could carry in my wallet).

When I tried it in the ignition, it worked fine - my dealer supplied key now sits on my dresser at home.

Before I'd shell over big bucks to the dealer (or anyone else) for chipped blanks and programming, I'd spend a buck at Walmart and see if it works...

All Excursions and some Super Duty trucks have them. If you put the PATS key next to a regular key you would see the diference. Like stated previously the chipped key has a little box by the key ring. Both style keys have a plastic top.
