Has anyone installed a kill switch into an 01 F250 7.3? I was thinking maybe splicing into the Neutral Safety Switch wire and installing a floor dimmer for the switch? Any other good ideas out there?
OK, I give, what's a kill switch? I spend most of my time on a boat, and a kill switch stops the boat when you get thrown out. Do you get thrown out of your truck often?
I spliced into a line going to the fuse pannle that controlled the stater, I installed a momentary push button that you hold while you turn the key, this connects the circuit and starts the truck, cost about 8 dollars for parts. This is the simpleist and cheapest way to go for moderate security, I sometimes leave the keys in the truck, but they wont do any good as long as the push button momentary switch is not pressed.
Welcome to FTE Skorpion007. On the 7.3 (and 6.0 I guess) the easy way to do this is by wiring a switch into the IDM relay. This would allow the starter to engage and the engine to spin, but the injectors won't fire so the truck does not start. With the engine spinning, there's less of a chance a thief would look for a kill switch. He'll (or she) just assume the truck has a problem and move on. Here's a link on how to do it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...nt-method.html
Be sure to stop in down at the 99-03 7.3 diesel section located further down the main forum listing for more good info on these motors.
You need to consider what effect you want it to have. To you want to disable the starter, and keep a thief from turning the starter or do you want the motor to spin or do you not want it go into gear?
I have a starter interrupt as part of my alarm system, but they are easy enough to build to cover any circuit. I also have a circuit that keeps the transmission locked in park unless you hit my secret switch, I like this system because I can keep the engine running but no one can drive off but me.
One thing to consider when building a circuit is the draw. A relay will pull 200mA or there about, a normal switch off draw for a vehicle is 20-50mA. How I would wire a kill switch is to use the ignition circuit to power the coil and the switch to make the ground. Then use 30 and 87a for your wires your interrupting. This will make a connection anytime the current cannot flow through the relay's coil, then when the switch is on and the key on, the coil will be energized and the connection broken. When the key is off and switch is on, the coil will be grounded but not powered so it's not creating a draw.
Great ideas all, I think I will go with the IDM relay interrupt. My biggest concern was something secure that wouldn't damage engine components. Besides it always feels good to turn the tables and fool thieves...
Thanks for the welcome F350-6

Hey buddy, Ive got a 2006 KR 6.0 id like to do this on. can you tell me which wire you spliced? I think im going to run it to my upfitter switches?
