hey guys. got a problem. this time my dump truck i know its off topic, but its a 90's model ford diesel LOL. but anyway....
i was in the middle of filling an order for 10 dumptruck loads of horse dung, when the situation got pretty crappy. i had to dig out a ramp so i could load with my bobcat onto the dump truck to be able to heap the loads up good. well, i went to pull out, and she started spinning. i rocked it back and forth, and almost had it out. i was in 1st gear hi side of axle. i decided to go to 2nd low. i did, turned wheels a couple times, then a pop and no more pull. my 2-speed had been acting up, not wanting to go to low side unless stopped, or in a hard pull going up hill. i think maybe my 2-speed gear in the rear end.
i took off the 2-speed control box and it cylces low to high, and i can move the stick that switches rear-end gear manually, but it wont go. my drive shaft turns, rear yoke spins, but she isnt lockin up. any ideas?
the recovery-
the tractor wouldnt budge the dump truck. so i hooked my truck to the front of the tractor, put it in low 4x4. no budge, just white smoke from my tires on the dirt. so, we hooked dads truck to the other corner of the truck, locked in 4x4 lox. it took 2 powerstrokes, and a farmall to move it out of there lol. pics coming.
You probably broke an axle. Pretty common on stuck trucks of that size. You either need to get the rear jacked up and spin the tires and see which doesn't spin the driveshaft or just unbolt the axle flanges one at a time and see which one doesn't have a full length axle attached to it.
i talked to a couple people locally and they said they bet it was the sun gear? that runs the 2-speed. and that it may have taken out planetaries. i can get any parts at wholesaler's cost =) but i will start with axles
well, i was in low. then i went to high to get to spin a bit faster then back to low. but i did NOT switch while it was spinning at all.
You should have kept it on the low side. Spinning tires with a big load on is a no no. If were to get traction it would have snapped the joints or the axle.

Same here TJ. The good thing with the axles is that they are easy to fix and you can do it on the job. You just need a really long rod to push the broke part through depending on where it snapped.
