I have an idea for a useful farm truck. It would utilize an older pickup(more room under hood) that would have semi truck air tanks mounted on the frame somewhere and would be charged by an engine mounted air compressor that I salvaged off of a mid '70s 366 Chev that had air brakes. All that would need to be done would to make a mounting bracket and run coolant and oil lines to and from the compressor. Has anyone tried this? Suggestions? Thanks...
I don't know any one that has done that, but you can turn certain types of a/c compressors into air compressors to fill your air tanks. Look in the off road forum for on board air and there should be some ideas on how to do it.
it has been done on service trucks and what-not. usually they are driven off of a pto rather than the engine directly. remember, full air tanks can be dangerous in a wreck
The old York a/c compressors are much more suited to this, since they have their own oil supply, and a clutch on the front. Hook the clutch to a pressure switch, and you have a fully automatic system. If you do use the truck compressor, make sure you properly hook up the governor. That compressor is spinning all the time, and the governor simply holds the intake valves open so it doesn't pump air when not needed. If it's not properly hooked up and set, then it can just keep pumping air until it blows something up.
