Times are tight and as much as I'd like to buy the Ford AIS intake system, it's out of the budget for the foreseeable future. I have a 4" turbo-back exhaust and the Evolution II for tunes so now I am trying to address the intake options. WITHOUT spending hundreds.
Because the Ford AIS seems to work better when people install a foam 'boot' and cut a hole in the housing to allow air in from the inner fender, it sounds like the 'snorkel' tube from the box to the grille doesn't pass as much air as the engine would like. The stock 'snorkel' looks to be smaller.
Would/should my intake volume be helped immensely if I did two relatively inexpensive things? First: cut a hole in my stock box and install the boot to draw air from the inner fender and Second: buy and install AFE's #73-80006 filter, which is the Pro-Guard element but in a larger conical shape that fits into the stock airbox.
Also, can anybody tell me the difference between AFE's two filter recharge kits, Gold or Blue, and therefore which I'd need if I don't learn of a compelling reason to NOT do this little mod?
Bro, if you are worrying about spending money and want performance out of your truck, scrap that idea and look at the link in my signature. Scroll down until you see the 6637 mod. It will perform nearly as well as the AFE and the AIS and it is HUNDREDS cheaper.
Whats wrong with the 6637 intake mod? do u know what it is? also - the stock air filter setup is good for up to like 500 or more HP. the only thing a air filter will do is A- lower EGTS just a touch and B- help filtration (this isnt a proven fact but some say the stock box lets alot of dust in)
Id say skip the AIS ford intake and do the 6637. Will cost alot less and will improve filtration and air flow.
$28-$32 delivered from fleetfilter.com vs. $70 adds up over the next couple of times that you have to replace the filter, but if you have a dislike for the added noise it may be worth it to you to go another route.
Phil, the 6637 was the FIRST thing I did, and it isn't louder, all I get is the woooosh sound when letting off the throttle, which I love. Try it, you'll like it!

The "Pro-Guard" is touted to be as good in filtration as a good standard filter but it is reusable, LIKE a K&N but without the problems according to AFE's website. Of course, without members here endorsing AFE's products I'd be less inclined to believe their claims.
Matt, I'm encouraged by your "...isn't louder..." statement. And Jim, your install is VERY nicely done but I'm guessing we're talking about "hundreds" again? Phil
Nope the box I built out of scrap sheetmetal. Other than the filter the paint was the most costly thing. My fault for going with metallic paint.
WOW Jim!! I had to go back and check on your location.... FL and/or MA are too far for me to inspect/copy/share some beverages. I'm VERY impressed with your job and you've added another option I hadn't considered. Do you have any more pics? That looks like some standard rubber door trim on the upper edge? Your solution would bring in cool air from the front and the fender plus maybe reduce any noise.
Thanks Phil. Some day I want to make up a few more and sell them. Too much going on now so no time. Here is a link to my photobucket there are a binch of pics there.
