Around 55mph and up i notice a really good shake in my steering wheel. Shakes back and forth. Notice it really rough while turning at these speeds, it really starts to shake. It shakes slightly at lower speeds and more so over bumps or on rough roads like dirt roads. My steering is somewhat loose, moves about 10-20 degrees each way before response. Any ideas where to start looking first? I replaced my gp's last weekend and while i had the intercooler tube off i did grab the shaft from the steering wheel to the gearbox and i could shake it up down and side to side a little bit. It wasn't dead tight. Is this not good? Does that mean there is a problem with the shaft or the gearbox?
How many miles are on this truck? You need to jack truck up in front and support with jack stands, don't trust any floor jack. Get someone to help and grab tires top and bottom and check for play, start truck up and move wheel back and forth in little movements of 6 inchs back and forth while someone checks things from underneath. Also check and make sure that pitman arm is tight. At the end of all the steering rods are tie rods look for play there, when you jerk the tires up and down your looking for play at the upper and lower ball joints, and if they don't move and there's play than it can be the unit bearing itself, and if all this checks good take it to a front end alinment shop. Let us know on here what you find.
The truck has 193,000 on it. I bought it last winter after the motor had blown and put a new motor in it. Should anything have any play at all? Or should everything be tighter than a drum?
There should be no play, also check your steering box were it is mounted to the frame, loose bolts cracked frame. Also you should not be able to move steering rod under hood that much.
Ok i went down in the garage opened the hood on mine, it has 107,000 miles on it and you cannot move the steering shaft at all. That could be some of your problem, check all the things i listed to, and do you have big tires or stock? Just thinking about out of balance tire also.
Just stock tires. I also thought about out of balance tires. I might go get them balanced this weekend if i have time. I'll check those things out for sure hopefully this weekend. Thanks again for the help
