I am new to this forum due to a friends problem truck. The truck is a 2002 F-350 Dually 4X4 diesel. Just recently the power steering started getting a mind of its own. The problem started when my friend called and said the power steering gets stiff and the truck shakes violently down the road. I test drove the truck and noticed it was hard to keep the truck in a straight line, power steering was very stiff at times and the truck would shake, felt like the front wheels were falling off. I found that the sector shaft on the steering box was loose and the tie rod on the drag link was loose. I replaced both and flushed the power steering system. Test drove the truck for about a mile. Wander went away but right after applying the brakes to slow down for a turn the steering got stiff and the truck started shaking again. Shake never went away. Next I installed a new power stering pump, shake was gone for a week, now it is back again. Any input would be very appreciated. Thanks.
I dont think the truck even has one. Truck is stock, no suspension mods, no lift, stock size rims and tires. The truck has been fine for years but now its making me crazy? This is not a light shake. You can see the bed shaking and the cab shaking when it happens. Thanks for the reply but i have a feeling it is more than just a steering stabilizer problem.
Does the shaking only occur when you use the brakes?
I'm not entirely sure on a 2002, but on later diesels, they used what is called Hydroboost brakes. Instead of using vacuum to boost the brakes, it uses hydraulic pressure from the power steering system.
I can't honestly imaging what could be happening in the brake booster to cause this shaking problem in the power steering. But since the two are linked there might be something to it.
Balljoints are brand new, sorry steering fluid is ATF, truck is a dually 7.3 diesel. I will double check the steering stabilizer, still skeptical on that causing the shake. When i mean shake this thing is so violent and dangerous you just need to stop driving, it is not just a slight vibration in the wheel. Weird that after all these years it started to develop this problem, Thanks again.

Thats what I was thinking about. I need to roadtest again to verify. The shaking after braking only happened to me once. After replacing the steering box and the pump it was good for a week. I figured the pump didn't have enough guts to supply brake assist and power steering at the same time, thats why I replaced it, unfortunately I do not have a pressure gauge to check pump output. I flushed the hydroboost as well. I really appreciate all of your input, keep it coming.
Something has to be loose. I've never seen a steering damper cause a shake. It's always something else. Usually tie rods, balljoints or a tire coming apart. Keep us posted...
