i was looking for a motor for my 89 ranger and now i found 2 2.9 l at a salvage yard now i have question they have one 2.9 with 75000 miles for 400.000 and they have one for 350 with 1000000 miles which one would u go with and how long do these 2.9's usually last for.
It's a crapshoot - either one could be the "better" motor. Depends on how well each one was taken care of previously. Sitting there on a pallet, hard to tell. Good luck.......
...do some vehicles run harder than others?.........who knows. Some drivers are harder than vehicles than others. Give two people identical vehicles - one will baby it, do the maintenance regularly, drive it easy. The other doesn't have time for oil changes, alignment, etc, and drives the he$$ out of it. Which one will last longer?
i know what ur saying by what i meant was like does a bronc idle at diffrent rpms then i ranger or the other way around i was just wondering because im kinda of new to this stuff i just want to make the right choice thanks alot charlie
Most vehicles idle around the same rpm. What would be more concern would be how LONG it idled in it's previous live time, (like TAXI service).Again it comes down to how the PO treated it.
Also how does the salvage yard know if the mileage they are telling you is correct? Most trucks and cars from that era only have a 5 digit odometer. They could have turned over a couple of times like on my 90 Ranger. And does the yard offer any guarantee for the engine to be good for maybe 30 days or so? Such as no smoking, no knocking and no leaks or cracks? If they do then you would be ok. But otherwise like has been said, it's a crapshoot.
I would go with the lower mileage motor and no it doesn't matter what it came out of. These motors can last up to a 200,000 miles easy with proper maint.
