Fuel Filter Question

i had trouble getting my truck starrted yesterday. 2006 6.0 psd, 68k miles. i have had it for about 2 months, bought it with 65k, oasis showed had never had any warranty work done. after dinner i went to start it and it would turn over but not fire. took probably 3 min to get started (crank 15 - 20 sec and then stop, continue). rand some errands and at the last stop didn't think it was going to start. took about 5 min. to get started.

anyway i changed the fuel filters (hadn't done it since i purchased it), had to go to auto zone since the dealer was closed. it started right up.

my question is should i immediatedly change them for ford filters, or can i use them until i would normally change again. this is my first diesel, and i intend on using only ford filters in the future, and i guess having a spare one handy.

anything else i should check or look at? i use ford cetane bottle with every fill up since i purchased the truck.

thanks

What kind did you buy? I would only run the Motorcraft or Racor brand filters

I would get some better ones in fast. The motorcraft/racor/international filters have the aqua block material on the primary filter that keeps water from heading to the injectors.

Yes switch them out ASAP to avoid problems. I hate problems on the road.

I would change the filters back to Motorcraft/International/Racor.
I was at Autozone a couple days ago and saw those filters, they are not the correct ones. They looked very cheaply made, and they were $50.00!

I buy mine on Ebay or from the International dealership in town. If you go to the International dealer, tell them you need fuel filters for a VT275. I try to not pay over $35.00 for these fuel filters. I have 2 sets on my shelf I bought for about $28.00 a piece (for the 2 filters in a set).

Thye 25 bones are for the knockoffs, not the real ones.

You listed the wrong engine, VT365 is the 6.0L; I don't think there is a VT275 out there...but then I'm a Caterpillar fan and not a Combine Kid, so there could be such a critter out there. The part number you want is:

1847170C93

Your going to pay about $35 to $40...but it's the exact filter kit your truck needs with both the primary (HFCM) and secondary filters and o-rings in the kit.

Our engine is essentially the same as the VT365 .... BUT ......... there is a VT275 and it is the one that takes a FUEL filter identical to ours.

The VT275 is a "small truck" version of the VT365 w/ six cylinders instead of 8 - downsized by International. The fuel filters for this VT275 engine EXACTLY MATCH our 6.0L engine filters!!! If you specify fuel filters for the VT365 (which is actually the Ford 6.0L full size International 8 cylinder engine), it will be the wrong one. REPEAT ...... The fuel filters are definately the wrong ones - they will give you a Luberfiner filter, not Racor if you ask for a VT365.

Note - you can / should specify the VT365 for oil filters.

You'll need a 36mm socket, I got a K-D that is 3/8 drive for the filter housing. Works allot better than using a pair of channel locks on the cap! That 36mm will also fit the cap on the HFCM on the frame rail. I know you can get 'em at most auto parts stores...or from Craftsman or Snap-On; which ever works for you. The drain plug on the oil pan is a 3/4" bolt, just in case you were wondering.

I have gotten my filters from Shop Diesel in the past. Just order them a few weeks or more before you need to change.

RACOR FUEL FILTER PF F4604
RACOR OIL FILTER 6.0L, 6.4L Ford PFL 2016

They used to have a fuel filter/oil filter set, that saved a little more money. But I can't find that on their web page any more.

Some people also use Ford 6.0 Liter Turbo Diesel Truck Filters, Air Filters, Oil Filters, Transmission Filters And Glow Plugs.

I'd be interested in seeing what Ed the FTE Parts Guy has. I bought a brake switch from him the other day and was impressed at the price, the cost and the speed of shipping.
