Hood edge wind deflector question

My '95 F150 had a wind deflector on the hood leading edge, but it was grinding off paint so I chucked it. Soon as I did I started getting stone chips. Someone said the deflectors will prevent most stone chips. I have since had two chips and the latest one is taking out the windshield. Before I replace the windshield, I want to get a new deflector, but need to know where to get one that won't rub the hood. Anyone know of a deflector that stands a good inch or so off the hood? Also, my '84 F150 didn't seem to have the stone chip problem. I wonder if the more aerodynamic '95 is more conducive to stone chipping because of the airflow patterns.

Hood edge wind deflector question

yo paul,
We had an "EGR" model on our 96 bronco. It cleared the hood ok, but:
it did rub-off a very small bit of the plastic chrome on the upper edge of the grille (about 1/2 in wide and 1/4 in high)
when others got to close the hood, they would tend to grab the deflector and break off a plastic retainer clip. This got so bad that I had to remove the deflector although heavy clear packing tape would mend the break(s).

I just bought a deflector for my 90 bronco. The deflector came with little rubber sticky things that stick to yur paint so the deflector doesn't rub against your truck. they come off really easy just pull them off!!!

I recall there were some little round marks on the hood, presumably from the little round sticky things that must have fallen off. I got the truck at 58,000 miles and the deflector already was on it.

The EGR model sounds like it would work. A little rubbing on the grille is not a problem for me. I think I need to go to a retail outlet where I can hold the deflector in place to see how it sits. This does not seem like a good item to mail order.

Have an old Deflect-Shield(? ill go check later) thats been on the truck since it was about a year old. hasnt worn anything off, at least not noticibly. IIRC, it has little rubber "gaskets" around the screws to keep the hood from rusting. Actually, the best exterior aftermarket piece on that truck thats been there a significant amount of time. Those things sure do save a lot of wiper fluid, hehehe.

I'd get the AutoVentshade Bugflector II. The #1 doesn't have the wraparound wings that cover the fenders. It sits very close to the paint, and comes with the sticky pads (that you can get at RadioShack), but the heavy curvature also makes it more rigid than the straight-up types. It won't flex as much when you're doing 90.

Hood edge wind deflector question

Wow. Just got my windshield replaced ('95 F150) for $155 installed! And it is NOT a used windshield. What a deal. The owner of the shop showed me the hood deflector on his '94 F150 (300 I6) and it stands well off the hood. He told me where I can get one and it is near my house. So I am on my way this afternoon for a deflector. Thanks for the help/comments. Also the owner of the glass place noted that the deflector does help deter stone chips, especially on Ford trucks. Now my wife's Aerostar has twice as big of a windshield and in 7 years we never got a stone chip. Must be something about the aerodynamics.

Hood edge wind deflector question

I see five brands are available, but it never says whether I will have a problem with it rubbing the hood. Perhaps the Bugflector II may work since it says it is easy to clean and wax hood which makes me think it is up off the hood. I'll have to think about it, maybe call AutoVentshade and ask them about the fit.

BTW I never looked at the Late Model Accessory store because to me Late Model means the new '97 and up style. Maybe you need to add a definition of late model.

Thanks.

Hood edge wind deflector question

So I went to the store and checked these bug deflectors (apparent correct term) out. Guy has one called the Stampeed for $55 which he says is made by the guy who used to make the Lund Interceptor and tha the cheaper Stampeed is basically the same thing. But then we are discussion wrap around versus regular shield and he asks what I am trying to protect. I said I really didn't care about the hood (I can slap some POR-15 on if it rusts) but want to avoid stone chips in the windshield. He says it only stops stones from straight in front and many come from the side and won't be stopped. So now I wonder if I should even bother with the deflector. Take my chances as the price of a windshield is only 155 (I called another local shop and they wanted 216 so looks like I got a pretty good deal). Anyway, I am in a holding pattern, not sure what to do.

With all the b Day and Christmas gifts, our 96 Bronco was in the beginning stage of becoming a ricer. I've taken all that plastic crap off and gone full metal...lol

I have the Lund Interceptor bug deflector on mine. It stays up about 1 - 1 1/2"off the hood.
