2 questions about Block Heaters

Hi all. Assuming that my glow plugs are disabled, at what temp will the truck crank while cold with no help from the block heater?

Does the block heater switch on an off with a thermostat of some kind or does it just suck power until the dogs come home? Thanks.

Starting would depend on the RPMs of the starter/engine and ability of the compression to build heat. Probably 40*F lowest temp but I have never really tried it........

Block heater comes on and stays on until unplugged....... but using a HD timer will allow setting the on time to allow 3 hours of heating at a special time commensurate with your wanting to start the truck.

Is 3 hours the average it takes to warm them up? Not usually colder than 30 here. Do you mean a simple outlet timer of some kind?

yea, we are talking about a ideally weatherproof outdoor outlet timer, try to find one rated for 15 amps. And never crank the starter longer than about 30 seconds.

15 amps would be the minimum rating for the timer.
Also use a heavy duty extension cord, 1000 watts is the normal block heater size.

I picked up a $15 water heater timer from Home Depot and hard wired a heavy gauge 25 foot extension cord along with each of the two phase of the power supplied to the timer to a double outlet mounted to the same 2X6 board I mounted the timer to.

I used a 4 wire yellow industrial strength cord (at least 3/4' thick or more) to go from a new, dedicated circuit breaker from the basement breaker box out to the garage wall where I mounted the timer (they are all 240 volt powered).

Outlets powered all the time on separate phases and the extension cord on the timer, all mounted together so it can come off the wall in 2 minutes.
