Ive always ran mercon3/dexron. The other day I went and bought tranny fluid and the guy behind the counter started arguing with me that I needed mercon V which I thought was a big no no, he also tried selling me some kind of additive that turns mercon3 to merconv to save on cost. Did something change that I didnt know of? Thanks
hedhntr; i ran into the same problem yesterday. so I looked up vavoline mercon oil, its site says mercon v replaces all mercon except mercon sp and mercon lv also replaces dexron 2 and 3 if i remember correctly. check out the site for yourself and maybe it can answer your question.. There is just getting to be a lot of changes and different oil types out there. too many if you ask me.. hope this helped
Ford put out a TSB a couple years ago stating Mercon V is now acceptable in our trucks. I believe the slightly changed the Mercon V specs to make it acceptable. I've been running it for about a year now, and it's running great. I put in Mobil1 Syn ATF (it's a Mercon V fluid).

Yeah they did. AFTER they determined that all the 4r100 trannys were OUT of warranty!!
I buy Shell mercon at Costco or my local Advance Auto Parts has a house brand mercon. I havent made the switch to mercon v...Im too afraid of a rebuild$$$$. My tranny has 160k on it, I will keep running Mercon.
I got mine changed when I first got her 2 1/2 years ago, I think they put in Mercon V and she has been perfect since. I am going in for a change again shortly and hoping there are no issues again... 245K km and counting!
