Not bad, not bad at all.

One thing I've always wondered about these 80 model year cars and trucks? What's up with the extremely poor paint adhesion? Mines doing the same thing with the chipping and such. Gonna probably wind up striping and repainting it in the summer.

Gotta love the EPA. I think it was in 1980 or shortly thereafter, a lot of paints - including automotive - were changed. You generally won't see an 80s model car or truck without paint peel, fade, or otherwise, unless it's been repainted! My '87 was somewhat repainted (not sure if it was due to collision damage or what), but my hood and front fenders are pretty crappy looking. I had to sand down the hood and prime it it was so bad - previous owner tried to rattle can it, but it was already peeling again. I have clearcoat peeling on the tops of the fenders. I plan on fixing all the dings and sanding it down real good and putting a new paint job on it. Still trying to decide if I am going back to the original color scheme (silver and dark blue) or the silver / charcoal that it currently has.

Well Artic Wolf..yes, that is a 64 merc,2 of them actually..lol..and no, no lift on the BII. I have'nt checked tire size yet..been to cold to go run out and look...lol

ok..things wrong with the new BII..wipers only have high speed..i will check it out when the sun shines again..
lach on back door was not laching on the double click (i assume for quite a while) so .where the tire holder on the door itself is mounted, the fiberglass is starting to crack...i'll take a pic...maybe somehas an idea how to fix this...

other than those 2 things..it runs great and is really clean...well taken care of...

They just dont make em like they use ta. Very cool. So now youve got 2 BII's whats yer plan of attack. The brown one gonna be a rock crawler? lol

Assuming yours has the multi-speed wipers, the switch is probably bad - that part of the multi-function switch, that is. I can't remember if the wiper switch part is separate or not. You'll have to probably replace it, which will require removing the outer shell of the steering column, but not the steering wheel, IIRC.

As far as the liftgate not closing all the way, my '87 does that sometimes, and I tried like hell to adjust it as best I could to no avail. So I just make sure I close it hard enough to close all the way or nudge it closed all the way if it doesn't. Not sure if anyone like LMC truck sells the replacement parts inside the liftgate or not... may want to check them out.

EDIT- I am wondering if the 1st Gen Explorer parts are the same:

You'll probably have to get a fiberglass repair kit to fix where it's cracking or hope you can find another liftgate in decent shape at a junkyard - finding a new replacement seems like a no-go as far as I know of. I haven't looked that hard, but I would think if there are vendors that sell replacement body panels... SOMEONE would sell replacement liftgates

EDIT - I didn't see any replacement liftgates on LMC Truck's site, may have to Google or eBay one

Well, as soon as it warms up here i am gonna take off the hardware and patch it from the inside..maybe put a metal plate on the outside to reinforce it.. it is really noisy when i hit bumps, which are everywhere here..lol

I would consider a metal plate on the inside of the hatch - the mount for the tire carrier latch already has the plate (sort of). I would also consider filling / patching the 'hole' where it's loosened up in the fiberglass. You could add more plate to the outside, though - but definitely consider reinforcement on the inside and using different (longer) bolts with nylock nuts, washers, etc. on the repair.

my `86 B11 has 2 speed plus delay wipers. a while ago they quit working except for high speed. the problem was in the little black box that is the delay circuitry mounted on the drivers side kick panel kind of up under the dash. i opened it up and played with it with the wipers turned on and sort of by accident found a defective solder joint on the circuit board. of course I had already pulled out a lot of hair with the switch in the steering column.

Not good to start pulling you hair out. Thats how you end up bald like me. But my baldness is from having kids one teenage daughter and the others going to be a teen in 10 yrs. Just when I figure its going to be safe it'll turn on me again. LOL
