Hey guys, im at the planning phases of my engine build, and its time to decide on the short block. Im torn between:
A: Buying a reman off ebay (1100)
B: Having my shortblock rebuilt
C: Having my block prepped, then reassembling it myself.
Im really liking option #3, Personally i dont like any one else working on my truck when im not there. Problem is, the only time ive reassembled an engine was in school, where they have all tools needed. I have the basics, sockets, wrenches, pliers, torque wrenches. But what id like to know is what are the specialty tools used when assembling an engine? (ie piston ring pliers, feeler guages, plastigauge etc) I know im forgetting somethings, and id like to know what they are, see if it would even be an option for me to reassemble it. Thanks for any help!
Also, I wanted to build my own, carb to oil pan. However with it being a 460 and 500+ hp, I decided to go through everything with a engine specialist in the city. He built my short block, fully balanced, with a 1 year warranty on his work. I picked it up, and my assembly included oil pump, pickup, pan, fuel pump, lifters, intake, pre-assembled heads and anything above them.
Not what I initially wanted, but I think it was the best choice I could have made about it.
If you have the basic wrenches and sockets here a starting list of what you need and it all depends on what you are building - a basic rebuilt or full prepped race motor. If it is a basic rebuild these are some of the essentials;
Manuel or engine book - saves a lot of time.
Camera and box of zip lock baggies with marker - more important than you think.
Engine stand and picker - goes without saying any more.
Fords have few bolt sizes that are unique and will add to your socket collection (forget what they are - 15/32's comes to mind but this is a guess - sorry not too helpfull).
Brushes - especially gun like bore brushes to clean the oil and water passages - a clean engine block is the VERY important.
Bottom end - plastic guage, rod bolt covers, ruler (measure bolt stretch) or torque wrench. Bearing lube.
Ring compressor is nice but not necessary - can be done one ring at a time, some preffer to do it this way.
Taps to clean the bolt threads.
Feeler guages.
Good gasket scraper.
Typical gasket sealers, oil.
Time and patience....
I forgot a lot and others will add to the list.
