Yet another VIN thread

Two trucks for the FTE braintrust:

F60AK553956

on a 64 F-600

and F61BE661733

on a 65 F-600

First one is my current dump truck, used around the property and for hauling firewood to my parents house.

Second one I just bought, cab and chassis only, I am hoping to re-power this one with a diesel and a 5 or 6 speed, and upgrade the front axle to more modern disc brakes.

Only other question I can't seem to find is the actual weight ratings of the individual axles. I need to know what the front is alone so I can upgrade properly. Thanks in advance.

Matt

P.S. Number Dummy, if you find this, sorry about the messages. On your user control panel I am not authorized to send you a pm. Don't know why, but I have emailed the admin to sort that out.

Welcome to FTE

You need 25 (or so) posts before you can access the P/M feature, but you could have sent me an email.

The AXLE code is listed on the Warranty Plate, located on the left door face below the latch.

Post the codes, once decoded, I can give you the front and rear axle weight capacities.

F60AK553956

F60 = F600 2WD

A = 330 2V Medium Duty

K = Kansas City Assembly Plant

553956 = 1964
----------------
F61BE661773

F61 = F600 2WD

B = 300 1V I-6

E = Mahwah NJ Assembly Plant

661773 = 1965

Thanks for the help. I will get the axle codes posted in a couple of days when I get back to where the trucks are. For now I will just have to pad my post count to get to 25.

156" Wheelbase

F602 = F600 (gas) 2WD / 20,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

181: 1 = Light Gray or Silver Gray Crush Vinyl & Light Gray Rib Vinyl // 81 = 81A Standard Cab

N = Dana-Spicer 5 Speed Direct

F8C: F8 = Eaton 2 Speed Rear Axle ~ Model 13802 // 6.33-1 & 8.81-1 / 15,000 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity // C = 5,000 lbs. Front Axle Capacity

Bill,

The truck (64) that I got the codes on has a 4 speed tranny. Does the factory designation mean 4 forward and 1 reverse gear for 5 speeds?

Still waiting on delivery of the 65.

Thanks,

Matt

Reverse doesn't count.

N = New Process 435 4 Speed.

In the transmission application charts, it lists the Clark 5 speed with the N code.

In the trans ID charts, it lists both the New Process & the Clark 5 speed for the N code.

If the retainer cap that holds the shift lever into the shift tower is retained by two pins, you have a New Process 435 4 speed.

If the cap doesn't have those two pins, the trans has been swapped.

In looking at my handy dandy paper books...there is no N code trans used on F600 trucks period...the N code is for F750/800 with 361 or 391 its a Spicer trans...
There IS however an M code used on the F600s with 330 engines...used on F550-800 with 330 or 361...these are both Clark 5 speeds...there 2 different ones...there should be a tag on the RH side of the case where the PTO cover is at..held on by 1 bolt...a small aluminum tag...on the end it would say Clark Equipment below where it says FoMoCo.
The New Process on big trucks is an A code trans...Its tag is a long tag held on by 2 bolts also at the PTO cover which is also on the RH side of the transmission.
Im not sure about the Clark trans, but the New Process 4 speed is a typical H shift pattern with reverse being over far right and rearward towards the seat.

Hope This helps...

OK kiddo, what happens if it is an N code, what transmissions would those be?

The same ones I listed.

If it IS an N code trans then Bill is correct...Look on the DSO code...it would be at the far right on the bottom line of the Warranty Plate ...if it is a 2 digit code that would be a standard production truck..if there are 6 digits, it would have been a specially ordered and equipped truck...Whats the story on the truck...was it a city/county or state truck or ???

I appreciate all the help, not sure if I am helping you guys much but I am trying. Crawled under the truck, and there is no tag on or under the PTO, I am guessing that the upfitter took it off with the cover and did not put it back on with the unit.

The shift lever has one pin where it joins the tower coming out of the top of the tranny. But it is an H pattern 4 spd with reverse being far right and back.

I think I am more confused than when I started.

Previous owner said it was a 391, but I know that isn't worth a hill of beans. I am not that concerned about this matter, just curious more than anything. Please don't spend any volume of time delving into the matter, unless you really want to. The best I can do is send you some beer for your troubles (I am a homebrewer). Thanks again,

Matt

cs65,

Forgot to add, I don't know the history of the truck. I have had it for 5 years, and the guy before me owned it for about 25 years. He was using it as a chip truck for his tree service. The interior paint looks to be original and is the classic "county work truck orange", but the exterior has been sprayed over multiple times. Everything leaks a little, other than the door tag, everything else is covered in oil/grease/dirt/dust/woodchps. Thanks again for your help.

When I typed the response to camperspecial65 (post #9), I had him on the telephone, so he knew what I typed...before I typed it.

You have a NEW PROCESS 435 4 speed. One of the pins is missing from the tower.

Reverse is over to the far right, then down (back towards the seat).

The only other 4 speed is the Warner T-98 (which was not installed in these trucks with 330/361/391 engines).

Reverse is up (towards the dash), and the cap threads on/off, so the tower has no provisions for the pins.

The pins are a dead give-away = New Process 435.

That's what I figured. Good tranny, and the truck still runs strong. I will be a little more interested in the 65 when it arrives here, but I don't know when that will be. I will post when I get the info.

As to the ribbing, glad it is the way it is. Being the newbie here I am certainly not looking to cause any trouble. I'm a rather large smart-a$$ myself, but that is really hard to convey on a message board. Thanks again gents,

camperspecial65 (Don) and I are pals. I rag on him all the time, and he gives back as good as he gets!

He stayed at my home when he attended the local Western Nats Truck Show last year, and will prolly be back again this year.

So he knows me and my 5 Basset Hounds () personally.

As far as being a weisenheimer, I wrote the book!
