everyone at my school has big trucks and loud exhaust. my i6 straight piped sounded good and loud until my welds rusted through. my 89 is just manifolds, and is louder than all get out and will stay that way till it warms up and i put my headers on that have been in the basement all winter!!! a friend of mine has a 6.2 chevy dualed and straight piped and it sounds like a gas but that thing will rattle windows. we have rev contests every day after class in the parking lot and everyday the dean comes out and yells at us, but he doesnt really care all that much. just some good ol boys having some fun.
You know im to old to be liking loud pipes. But I still they think they sound sweet. Especially if they cackle an pop. So am I the only one that still thinks this way?Hope not I still here a lot off loud trucks around. Thanks guys
Well to me, it depends of the compression ratio. Older compared to new engines, hands down older higher compression engines take the cake. The newer low compression engines (not all though) sound like vacuum cleaners to me. I like some "pop" in the exhaust but if it has too much crackle or is too loud with a bad sounding exhaust, put a muffler on it.
My '93 F-150 that I just got rid of used to have true dual glass packs that were 12" long and 2.5" in/out w/o the converters; I could never "sneak" anywhere with that truck...
The '71 F-100 I just traded it for I'm debating on going with mufflers or just running it straight back off the headers all the way out..
When I was in high school I had 2 1/2" straight pipes on my 78 f-150 4x4 with a 400. Loudest thing in the parking lot, poped and crackled and sound like hell unleashed. Now its got a lil more built 400 with some work, 2 1/2" pipe and flowmasters with headers. I liked my old straights better, but the wife doesnt.
I just installed a 6" stack kit on my truck, 4" from the turbo back to the T. The T and the piping in the bed are 5" then into 6" mitre cut stacks. It has a nice rumble to it, until go stomp on the go pedal then it is loud!
Well, I used to like trucks loud, but then I went on a 1600 mile trip with Chucky Babe and three other guys in his Bronco II. (yes, five guys in a Bronco II) Between the exhaust and the soft top the noise was incredible, even with earplugs.
i love loud trucks. mine is real loud i have a cut out that never is closed. I do want to build a real exhaust for it but unfortunatly it is low on the list of things to do i jusy bought new tires and next i need to figure out why my 4WD isnt working. When i build it i want to dump it before the right rear tire with a dual tip. I plan on putting on a better cat and a maybe a muffler depending on how it sounds after the cat.
Was set up to sell at the farmers market last week, and an older lady said she'd moved forty odd times, and this was one of the smallest towns she'd ever lived in, but it was too noisy, and started complaining about how the ordinances aren't enforced and how if her exhaust leaked she'd have to pay to have it fixed and all this. Her vision wasn't that great, but then she noticed the "Performance Exhaust Systems" in giant letters on my shirt when I told her I didn't mind so much. She reiterated how most people don't maintain their cars properly, and how it's expensive, or some such, then I pointed to the dual tubes coming out the back of my truck, and told her I didn't mind the noise because I was one of the noise makers, and that it's not loud because I don't maintain it, it's loud because it was made that way on purpose! She sort of rolled her eyes at me...
the louder the better i always figure... i do love the sound of the chebby 396 ive been using to haul crab pots around with... headers ran strait out the back to glass backs... only problem is... the damn carb needs a rebuild...
on my ford... the cherry bomb turbos i have on it sort of make it sound like chit... i think i need to just take them out and stait pipe it out to the rear wheels and send it out before the rear wheels... maybe add some glass packs just before the turn...
I miss the straights on my 86, and My 72 f100 just runs headers. but then again the Flowmaster 40s make my 86 rumble so it still sounds good i guess, still gets loud
Im runnin open headers on my 77 f150 4x4 and i love it.......my parents say it sounds like junk lol.......but i thank it sounds mean , sounds like a dam monster truck
I agree with alot of the people out there that say it has to sound good too. Some trucks/car with loud real loud exhaust sound like crap. I like the smooth mellow tone. I'm running 30 inch glass packs and duals plus headers and I can get a nice smooth dual tone out and still turn heads with it.
