Concrete question

How long will it take to dry enough to lift?

I poured a block to be used for ballast. 21" x 24" x 18" tall. I formed a piece of 5/8" rebar in the shape of a handle so I can pick up my block and move it around as needed. The block was poured Tuesday afternoon late. High temps have been upper 60's to low 70's here. How long do I need to wait until I lift this block by the handle?

2-3 days should be enough

Good. I was starting to get worried. It's been 2 days now and the block still "looks wet". Not watery, shiny or soft, just doesn't look dry. I was worried about pulling my handle out.

Is the rebar U shaped inside the block or just 2 points sticking down in? Might wait at least 3 full days before grabbing it....Bummer if it pulled out.

When I worked for a redi mix outfit, we used to strip and lift out 1\4 - 1\2 meter blocks the next morning after we poured them with our leftover crete, the odd time one would break loose.

Of course I neglected to pay attention to your temps. A day or two is plenty.

Not U shaped on the bottom, but I bent the ends outward horizontal so they weren't just sticking straight down in there.

I'm pretty good at being the odd one, so that's why I was worried.

Got a heck of a deal on an AerWay (to aerate hay fields). It just didn't have the concrete blocks with it.

I've just been worried about picking it up by the handle, getting it about 2' in the air, and having the handle come out.

I guess you need to hit the gym more often Steve. I can pick that thing up and carry it around without even breaking a sweat.

I just run a chain through the handle, hook it to my front end loader, and raise it as high as I want and take it wherever it needs to go.

Thank you for the correction. I had assumed people would understand what information I was looking for. Since I'm not sure exactly what structural, compressive, or flexural strength is required to hold said rebar handle in place during the lifting procedure, I thought it would just be easier to ask how long it needed to dry before I tried to lift it. I didn't provide the mix ratio so someone could do these calculations for me since this is just a piece of ballast and I'm comfortable with a shoot from the hip approach here.

Good one!

How much gym work does it take to operate a front-end loader?
