Got a 1 barrel carb ,that was remaned and installed last winter, run fine . Last week while plowing snow I crashed a bank hard . Noticed a gasoline smell, and started running rough. This problem seemed to go away ,and ran fine for about a week, then noticed the smell and rough running. Checked under the hood and saw alot of gas aruond the base of the carb, further inspection noticed gas coming out of the vent tube on top of the carb. Read lots of threads last night about float levels, and metering adjustments. Could hitting a snobank cause these problems with flooding or just coincidence? Help pleaseFMJ
It sounds like the needle slipped off the float tang. Open the top of the carburetor, and re-install. It's unlikely that it changed any adjustments, but more likely knocked something out of place. Should be an easy fix.
Pulled the top off last night, didnt seem to be anything out of place. The needle was intact appeared as though the float was making needle move like its supposed to. IS there a wire clip that holds the needle to the float/ I didnt notice any. FMJ
Nope, the needle just hangs off the float. The loop on the needle slips over the float tang. The seat guides the needle so that it may only move up and down, and not slip off the float tang.
Did you check to see if maybe you cracked a mounting bolt or gasket near the base? I know I had a gasket go bad and there was gas all around the base. Something worth checking.
Other than that, I can't really see a metering rod getting out of adjustment by hitting a snow bank, since it's adjusted by a screw that goes up and down. As for a float, you could always just measure it and make sure it's in spec. What year is your carb/truck?
The gas came from the over flow tube on top and seemed to be leaking where the linkage goes through the front of the carb., I think its calleda pump lifter. I bought a rebuild kit, going to try messing with the float, and seat assembly first to see If that helps. Carb is a year old, should I go through the whole rebuild? I beleive THe motor is a 74 or 5. Please reply with any suggestions FMJ
FMC 400 Wh at is the loop on the needle ? Could it be in the bottom of the bowl ? Going to take the carb off right now and prepare for surgery ! Will wait for replys before starting FMJ
I was curious about the year because I was going to grab the float specs when I got home. However, if you have a rebuild kit, you should have the measurements in it.
If you have the whole kit, I'd just replace everything in there while you're at it. You're already in there, have fresh parts in hand, and it never hurts. At least that's my take.
I'm not sure what the loop is, unless it's something on older models. On mine, the needle is simply held in by the float tang and can't come out because it's in the way. If you remove the float, the needle'll just fall out.
