transmission quit pullin !?!?!?

I was just going up a small hill about 40 mph. Heard a thump, then no forward drive, engine reving. Grabbed 4hi, nothing, costed backwards to driveway about a mile back, then i tried 4lo, still nothing.

Go a ride home, so did not get chance to look it over, driveshaft was there, tranny fluid looked full.

Being a truck puller, it felt like an input shaft, or torque converter bolts, not sure if either are common with these trucks.

Any ideas

You might see if it will pull in L. Mine did the same thing, runs great after $4200 new transmission installed.

I was on I 59 at 70mph and it just coasted to a stop as if in Neutral.

We sat on the side of the road a bit then when safe I got out and did a look over. It wasn't bleeding so I decided to try to limp to the next exit (3 miles) by using only L. It did move in L and we made it to a gas/stop. No support for 30 miles and there was a hurricane comming. After checking the fluid I decided to give it a try. I used L to get to the interstate, then very slowly and easy accelerated to about 30 then let off the gas and shifted to D. I feather footed it at 35 and took about 5 minutes to get it up to 45 (NOTE I DID NOT LET IT GO INTO OD). Each time I reached a shift point I would let off the gas to make a very gentle shift. Finally I got it into 3rd and held 60,, then got real gutsy and let off the gas and shifted to OD. I didn't load the transmission going up hills I got a running start and let up on the gas while going up grade. (We don't have many hills). I held this feather foot driving at 70 mph for 155 miles until I made my exit off the I10. At the stop light I had to use L again to get it moving. Basically the clutch pack had worn out. So I had a total rebuild and update done on the transmission with a upgrade torque converter. While the tranny was out all driveshafts were either rebuilt or replaced. (4WD).

So if you need to move the truck you might try the manual shift from L and at each shift let off the gas to coast into the next gear. DON'T use OD unless you can do as I did and drive steady and not have to shift.

Also after the transmission cooled it would pull for about 5 miles until warmed up then do it's neutral thing again.

Learned how to drive with a bad clutch in a 66 Ford 6 cyl with bad clutch and no money.

no luck. it was a tad low, so i even aded some fluid, but it does nothing not even an attempt at movement.

Something i did notice. It has always made a thump noise a few seconds after starting, coming from tranny area, sounds like something engaging. It is not doing that or anything else.

I would guess the torque converter has failed and it won't move. If it was functional I would expect it to move in L. Sorry but I think you will need a total replacement.

You might consider Bryans Truck Stop for replacement. I considered it but given I was stuck, , a hurricane was comming I could not wait so I did the best I could given the stress level at the time.

what about reverse. I had to drive home one time in a 65 Olds because of the same thing. Only had to go about 5 miles and it was late at night. But I got home. Had to rebuild because of the clutch packs and a spline bearing if I recall.

That would be a good check. The torque converter will have to work for reverse to work. But it might also be the front pump.

i'll be willing to bet the "thump" noise ur hearing is the HVAC blend door moving..

it can make a noise down low in the cabin and actually feel like its a problem sound when in fact its just a echo or resenance noise...

mine seems to be louder on cold morning to..

no reverse, it stopped just like throwing a switch. If I pull one of the lines, that would tell if the pump and input shaft were ok.

Good idea on the blender door, but this sound is underneath. I have listened in the garage with door open. I thought that was normal, ussually npo one else would hear it, my wife did, while sitting in garage. Normally you just put it in gear and go so you have a lot of other sounds, but when you start and just sit there listeneing, it would sound just like it was going into FWD.

Od to me is this thing never slipped or gave any trouble, none. Been all over the last week during the ice and snw storms.

I can probably get a used tranny, friends owns a yard, but things are tight right now, so i hate to do even that, if it is just a solenoid or something likw that.

thanks all

It's not a solenoid or anything electrical. There is nothing electronic that can keep the trans from engaging. There is a mechanical failure in the trans.

Correct, ,this is why it should move in L if the torque converter/pump is running. Sounds like new transmission. "Good judgment comes from bad experience". I bought a new transmission last year, because mine failed during evacuation for Gustov while pulling my 6000# boat.

Update. Trans shop tore it down, says forward drum is broken. All internals look like new. 850 to fix drum, and do somethign to pump and something else he does on all 4r100's. I have not talked with him direct, so not sure what all that is, just that he would not do anything unless he did those two things. 850 with 90 day war. 1 year if he goes all the way through it. Anyhow, I said go for it. Should have it back in the next day or so.
