Eliminating resonator

I have a 97 Explorer w/5.0 L and I am replacing the exhaust. What is the purpose of the resonator. Will there be any negative affect on performance if I do not use one? Thanks in advance for your comments.

You won't lose anything on performance, you will probably get a really annoying droning noise inside especially when the engine starts to pull (up hills).

We did this on a 86 parisienne. It already had a cat and a muffler and the resonator fell apart, so we just put a longer tailpipe on after the muffler.

We noticed no difference in sound or performance.
